Windows 10: Microsoft Says Windows 11 26H2 Makes 8 GB PCs Up to 20% More Responsive and 40% Faster at...

Microsoft has detailed a set of memory management changes in Windows 11 that it says make PCs with 8 GB of RAM up to 20 percent more responsive and 40 percent faster at multitasking, according to a Windows Experience Blog post by Pavan Davuluri, executive vice president of Windows and Devices. The improvements ship in Windows 11 26H2, build 26300.9818 or later.

The post follows a renewed push on memory optimization that Microsoft started earlier in 2026. Copilot+ PCs, which Microsoft continues to promote, require at least 16 GB of RAM, while memory prices keep climbing on demand from AI infrastructure.

Windows 11 Memory Changes for 8 GB PCs

Most of the work adjusts how Windows 11 handles memory on lower-specced hardware instead of adding features. Microsoft lists these changes:

• Windows 11 keeps up to 2 GB more active data in memory before moving it to slower storage.
• Windows connects directly to Microsoft Edge when the browser is already running in the background, which Microsoft says lets Edge launch up to 33 percent faster.
• Microsoft Teams can enable Efficiency Mode by default on 8 GB machines, and the company says Teams then launches up to 20 percent faster.
• Widgets load only when they are used instead of running all the time.
• Edge puts inactive tabs to sleep after 15 minutes by default, down from two hours.

Third-party apps can use the same memory tweaks, according to Microsoft.

The blog post also cites benchmark data from research Microsoft commissioned, comparing 2026 Windows machines with models from 2021. In that report, a 2026 Dell XPS 13 with 8 GB of RAM performed about as well as a 2021 Dell XPS 13 with 16 GB across selected workloads. Microsoft's reading of the result is that "the complete PC, not memory capacity alone, shapes the experience."

Davuluri drew a line for heavier use as well. He described 8 GB as "a great fit for the things they do every day" for everyday users, while workloads such as 3D modeling, advanced video editing, or large-scale data processing "benefit from 16 GB of memory or more," according to the post.

How to Get the 8 GB Improvements on Windows 11

The gains depend on both the Windows 11 version and on app updates, so owners of 8 GB PCs need both parts current:

1. Confirm the PC runs Windows 11 26H2, build 26300.9818 or later, and install pending updates through Windows Update.
2. Update Microsoft apps such as Edge and Teams, since Microsoft says "some improvements arrive through app updates or through Microsoft Store."
3. Review Edge tab behavior after updating. Tabs that sleep after 15 minutes free memory sooner but need to reload when reopened.

The 20 and 40 percent figures are Microsoft's own claims, and the commissioned benchmark covers selected workloads only. Microsoft has not said whether PCs on Windows 11 versions older than 26H2 will receive the same memory changes.

Will 8 GB make WIN10 run ok on a Core 2 Duo?

Microsoft lists the Windows 10 minimum hardware requirements as:

• Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC.
• RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit.
• Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS.
• Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver.
• Display: 800x600

But I reccomend

1. processor: 2.5 GHz Dual Core (Faster is better)
2. RAM :- 4 GB (2018 Atleast 8 GB)
3. HDD 320GB
4. GPU :- any (Nvidia Tiatan v is the Best)
5. Display :- 1920X1080 (Full HD)

Microsoft Sells 40 Million Windows 8 Licenses

Yesterday at the Credit Suisse 2012 Annual Technology Conference Microsoft's Tami Reller (Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer for the Windows division) has announced that, in its first month of life, Windows 8 has reached 40 million sold licenses, outspacing Windows 7 in terms of upgrades.

Microsoft did not provide one-month numbers for Windows 7 but the estimates back then were that it sold about 40 million copies, meaning Windows 8 is pretty much on par with its predecessor after one month. Not a bad start for Windows 8 but certainly not a raging success.
