Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

Download Back Up Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.

  3. W10 Backup - Options

Hi Wungraileng Vahi, thanks for replying so fast. Sorry I'm a little bit late with my reply.

I think you have to know the following points:

    My PC has:

    • W10 built 1511
    • I have to reactivate the backup functionality regurly
    • My external hard drive for backup is a Western Digital 4 TB, NTSC formatted
    • When W10 ask for connecting the hard drive again, the remark is that "the hard drive is not connected" while in Windows explorer the drive is presented!
    • After a restart of the PC somtimes the backup function is OK but sometimes the hard drive is not recognized.
    • When, after restart W10, the hard drive is recognized the backup function will fail after about 3 days while in the meantime nothing has done with the operating software
    • When I try to open the "instellingen" (adjustments? I don't know the english word)) menus by clicking the Windows logo - the backup function - more options the menu has closed by the operating system. So I can't adjust the other backup options.
So, referring to your answer, I think a system restore would not take away my problem.

This problem occurs after W10 built 1511 was installed. I hope you can help me out.

Kind regards and a joyfull new years eve,

    W10 backup function in settings

    Hi Daffey,

We understand how important those folders that you wanted to back up. To help us determine appropriate troubleshooting steps to resolve your concern, we'd like to ask more details about the issue:

    • How do you access the Backup options?
    • Settings> update and security (backup)> backup> more options> add a folder> Then I browsed to the folder, in this case it was on my desktop, labeled 'new cool programs'. Attached is PDF view showing the folder selected, and
hourglass where curser was positioned to 'choose this folder'. However when I click, a
momentary light circling timer flashes, but the folder does not appear in the backup list.
    • Are you referring to Back up using File History or Looking for an older backup?
    • I'm trying to edit the list of folders that the automatic backup feature will backup. Notice that the list has none currently (I deleted them all), as the only file (s) I wish to backup are
individual folders on my desktop. Some are sub folders within category folders. Because I work exclusively on my desktop, it has over 200 GIG of data, most of which I do not wish to back up. See next question ~~
    • Can you please provide us the screen shot of the options that you currently have?
    • I have determined that you could select a folder with the W10 backup 'folder select' option if the folder is in the user file standing alone, sort of like a separate library (? I'm not tech term savvy) See second PDF labeled
'Alone'. There you can see I have successfully added 'Alone' and the path was 'C'>USERS> GURU (I think highly of myself!! (humor)) The problem is that's not in any place I, or normal users would keep work files. I think W10 is having difficulty going below
the user library when trying to select individual folders.
    • I've tried this on two different W10 machines with the same results.
      However, you
CAN deselect individual folders in the 'remove folder' option on the settings screen just below the 'add folders' button. Seems like it'd be the same function???
    • Hope this helps, Genevieve, can I help more?
    • Reply Email bounced - this will not accept PDF files- -how do I send screen shots?
