Windows 10: 0x80042412 error when trying to restore system image

I recently had it reimaged with default windows and i would like to get things back to how they should be by using my own image. The problem is the image was made of the old system reserved partition and main partition of two separate drives. I now want to restore both partitions onto the drive that was composed completely with the old main partition.How can i shrink the partition so there is space for both parts of the image? Could i remake the system reserved partition and only restore the main partition?

I am having the same problem but with Windows 10.

Can you clarify the steps you took before booting the disk part I am slightly confused. Did you do a blank install of windows and then go back to add the system image later?

the system image restore failed "0x81000036"

Ran into this error when trying to restore from system image using intall usb drive.

(After solving 0x80042412 using @rayray403 's guide. (Error 0x80042412 when restoring from a system image backup))

I was able to solve this by:

shutting down

switching usb ports of both the install usb and external usb drive (holding system image)

The 0x80042412 error indicates that the partition you are restoring to is smaller than the partition that was backed up. The native Win Backup/Recovery software is very picky and is having problems over disk sizes smaller by just a few KB.
