Windows 10: 0x80070002 Error trying to load Windows 10 20H2

Updating windows shows I need to update to Windows 10 Update 20H2 and KB4023057. It fails on the download with of Win 10 Update 20H2 with error code 0x80070002.


I have tried multiple fixes to update windows that have failed including using services.msc to stop windows update; delete update folder, restart windows update and try update again. Again error code 0x80070002.


Latest try is Windows 10 Update assistant that confirms that I have Windows home 10 20H1 from winver: Version 4, Build 19041.630.

Confirms CPU, memory and disk space is OK.

Here it downloads and validates the download and "installs," but on restart, it restarts multiple times and says "undoing system updates" and reverts to the existing system. I have gotten up to 15% installation after initial reboot, then reboots and undoes update.

DELL Inspirion 5567 64 bit

Intel i7 gen 7

HD: 1 Tb SDD with 340 Gb free.

Winver: Version 4 Build 19041.630

PS> I can't do a clean reinstall as I don't have all the data needed to reinstall all currently installed programs.

Error 0x80070002 when trying to update Windows

I have been having issues for months with Windows 10 updates failing due to Error 0x80070002 on my gaming laptop. The full message reads:

2019-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4503286) -Error 0x80070002.

I am currently on version 1803 (OS Build 17134.590) and I'm being told "You're currently running a version of windows that's nearing the end of support. We recommend you update to the most recent version of Windows 10 now to get the latest features and security improvements."

I have followed the instructions on Error Code 0x80070002 Fixed – Eassos Step-by-Step Tutorial but this hasn't resolved the problem. Does anybody know how to fix this?

This error can be bypassed by doing an installation in place.

windows 10 20H2 make an iso and extract the iso in place then access the extract folder then lunch the setup.exe and then accept keep files and apps. Leave a feedback

2004 update windows 10 error 0x80070002

Hello everyone,

thanks to some of the suggestions here and to some from other sources I have managed to fix the 0x80070002 error breaking up my feature update to 2004.

For completeness' sake and since it may help others, the following steps worked for me.

1. Download Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website
2. Create a bootable USB drive with the MCT
3. Boot up from this USB Drive
4. Choose install settings, click 'Next', but on the next screen select "Repair your computer" instead of "Install"
5. Choose "Troubleshoot" -> "Startup Repair" and let it finish
6. Restart into Windows and attempt the usual Windows update

It looks like the BCD on my computer had been damaged by the boot loader (Windows 10 + Recovery partition) and running the "Startup Repair" from the installation USB Drive corrected the errors.
