  1. 1 app stopping shutdown

    OK, here goes:
    I right click on the desktop and get a menu;
    I select new and shortcut'
    It asks me the location of the shortcut, I type desktop;
    It asks me to give the shortcut a name, I type shutdown;
    The only option now is Finish.
    So, where do I enter your shutdown /s /f /t 0 ???? I'm lost!

    Heavens, I hate being old!

  3. Thanks again, Brink, Option 3 worked out fine and I had no issues when restarting the laptop.
    I should like to mark this thread as solved but it really isn't, is it? It's just a workaround.
    So, I'l wait a while, maybe a formal solution shows up.

    Yeah, it's not completely solved until you find out which app is hanging at shut down.

    Does it happen if you shut down while in Safe Mode?

    If not, then how did troubleshooting with a clean boot posted below go? It's a bit of a pain, but you'll have to shut down between the steps until you hopefully find a culprit.

    The tab should have 100+ processes.

    There is a tutorial for that.

    Norwegian? It would be a one-way dialogue. (smiley)

    edited to add: Is the shutdown always interrupted? Might want to look at the Startup tab in Task Manager for possible third-party offenders.

  6. Once you get that message, cancel the shutdown, open taskmanager, check - Processes - Apps.
    There should be that many. "End task" for one app and try to restart, it it still hangs, try another.

    You can also download Process Explorer. Start it and check, if there is anything running in the tree/under "rundll32.exe", it might be a running scheduled task (no icon/name).

  7. I think by process of elimination as recommended I have finally isolated the app that was causing the shutdown problem. It was a desktop search engine which continues to "update index" even after you shut it down. I have uninstalled the app and for the last three days I have not had the shutdown problem a single time. I shall wait a few more days and if things stay the same I shall mark the thread as solved. Thanks to all. Tony V.
