  3. w10 slow after last update june 2017

Hey. I installed the summer update on my stationary windows pc yesterday, running Windows 10. Now its unbearably slow. Cpu and ram usage is the same but boot up and using programs is horribly slow. Is there gonna be a fix for this? I need to rollback because
i can hardly use my PC.

    Cpu: I7 4790k

    8gbs ram.

Gpu: Gainward geforce gtx 970, 4gb

Depending on the rest of your hardware, the RAM upgrade may have the least affect on increasing the performance. If you are running 32-bit Windows 10, more RAM won't help at all.

    Hi,

Without system specs it's really hard to tell.
More RAM is pointless if you're limited by either a 32 bit install or worse a 32 bit CPU.

I've installed 64-bit Win10 on a couple of computers with 2GB RAM, seem to be fine but they aren't used for large databases, spreadsheets or for video editing. I've also installed 32-bit Win10 on a computer with 4GB RAM and outside of showing only about 3.5GB works just fine. I have 32-bit Win10 on a Tablet with only 1GB RAM, not too bad for a 1.33GHz Atom CPU. A lot of performance will depend upon what it's used for. My Tablet has only a 32GB SSD so I added a 64GB MicroSDXC card for more storage.

4GB is adequate for regular office use and such, but if you are into video editing you need a hefty microprocessor and 16-32GB RAM.
Also, there is no need for x64 version for 2GB RAM.

    Hi,

What would make it noticeably faster is a more powerful CPU such as a quad core one if you can still find it.
A SSD instead of a regular HDD would help too.

But that's only if you really want to hang on to that machine because it's always going to limited by its chipset's bandwidth, RAM FSB. It's probably SATA II also and so on.

    Cheers, *Wink

A lot is going to depend on the motherboard as well. It looks like a lot of motherboards for that processor only support 4 GB:
Intel Pentium E5800 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor Compatible Motherboards - PCPartPicker

Also, need to look at the manufacturer's website and see if a bios upgrade is needed - sometimes the bios will limit the amount of RAM you can use.

It also depends on your budget. I would say the biggest performance increase you would see would be from upgrading from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD. If you can only afford to do one or the other that would be the upgrade I would do first. After moving from hard drive to SSD, then I would look at doubling the RAM to 8 GB which should max out your memory performance until you get into more intensive gaming or video or photo editing.

I saw a huge performance increase on my current laptop which has 6 GB of RAM when I upgraded to an SSD. I have a new laptop coming on Wednesday with an i7-4702HQ processor, 8 GB RAM and 2 TB HDD. The very first thing I am doing is replacing the HDD with the SSD from my current laptop and putting the 2 TB HDD in an external USB enclosure.

I have 2 older laptops for spares that came with 4 GB RAM. I upgraded them both to 8 GB RAM and I can tell you the increase in performance was much greater when I upgraded my HDD to an SSD then when I doubled the RAM on those laptops.

I would definitely add more ram, at least to 8 at a minimum, I have the same exact processor in my dell with 8 gigs of ram running win 10 64bit,
more ram multitasks better, especially with win 10

if you are looking for faster boot times, or loading programs quicker, go get a ssd for your boot drive

go with 8gigs, or 16 gigs is better

trust me, you wont be dissappointed

    Hi,

Were there socket 775 motherboards out there that even supported 16 Gb of RAM ?

That said, I've an oldish Dell OptiPlex 745 and its the SSD that makes the biggest difference. Anything else is money down the drain IMHO. Especially when you consider the age of such a pc/portable.

4GB should be enough for a smooth w10 experience imho. Adding more ram never hurts though.

Inexpensive 120 GB SSD for main OS, and HDD for data is without doubt the best thing for any PC, old and new. It makes a 7 years PC look like a current one in my experience (my netbook for example *Smile ). And a SSD can be reused in future computers unlike RAM (if previous generation) or CPU.
