Windows 10: 1709 Fails to install and how to remove multiple recovery partitions?

Am facing two issues / have some questions:

1. 1709 fails to install

Windows downloads all the files, starts the upgrade setup.
Once done, and after 'Configuring update for Windows...'the first re-starts ends up with a BSOD

"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We'll restart for you.
"For more information about this issue and possible fixes, visit https/www-windows-com/stopcode
"If you call a support person, give them this info:
"Stop code SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED

Windows re-starts and restores previous version of Windows.
After the restore, there is no way to find out what might have been the cause.
Is it a driver and if so what driver?
Is it the Firewall, is the the '1709 compatible' AV software?
The NVidia GTX970 driver is also the latest and is '1709 ready'.

Question: is there a possible other way to find out what might have been the cause of this problem?

2. After a couple of attempts, Windows created a few extra partitions.
They are small in size.

Questions:
is it possible to delete these partitions safely ?
could these extra partitions be the cause of the issue?

3. Find out the cause whilst using USB install.
The following is something I am -not- sure of, so I did -not- try it.
It seems... that running the Windows 10 1709 from USB (created using Media Creation Tool),
the upgrade at some point would tell me the item that is not compatible and needs attention(?)

Something like:

"What needs your attention"The following things need your attention to continue the installation and keep your Windows settings, personal files,"and apps.
"This device isn't compatible in Windows 10. Contact the manufacturer for more info.

Question: at what point in the process is this message displayed?
Is it displayed at a point that I can abort the setup process?

4. When using USB - going thru the steps, just before the install I get a screen 'Ready to install'

Question: What will happen with the existing Windows?
Meaning to say, will it be upgraded only, or entirely be replaced as if it were an install from scratch (so I need to re-install all other applications?)

How to remove multiple recovery partitions from the system

I have a windows 10 system, while checking in disk management i noticed that there are 7 recovery partitions. All of them are empty but i dont know how to delete them and retrieve the system space. I have posted an image so that it is easier to understand
what i am trying to explain.

Please tell me how to delete or merge the recovery partitions.

1. Partitions: it's quite normal for an upgrade to create a new Recovery partition. This is not a problem. It can be the case if there are multiple sequential failed upgrades that multiple Recovery partitions are created. Yes, it's possible to identify the unused one, or ones, but this is not your present priority.

2. Basics:
Please run
Hard disk Sentinel (trial) to check your disk and post a screenshot of its GUI.

Please post a screenshot of ALL your disks using Minitool Partition Wizard (free). Make sure all text in columns is visible.
That way we can check no other disks have Windows system partitions on them and the free space available etc.

Now check your file system:

From an admin command or powershell prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:

Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

Then run SFC /SCANNOW from an admin command prompt and advise the result.

3. Precautions before re-attempting the upgrade.
a. Create a disk image of Windows using e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) (Backup, Backup Windows) on external storage
This we strongly recommend to do routinely to protect yourself should your PC become unbootable, disk fail, etc..
b. Disconnect any unnecessary esp. wireless peripherals.
c. Disable or uninstall any 3rd party security software (it may well be broken by the upgrade if it doesn't interfere with it).

4. Further ideas:
Uninstall any possible conflicting programs that modify the UI
Disconnect unnecessary peripherals.
Delete content of
%temp%
and
Software Distribution\Downloads
folders

You could try a clean boot, then upgrade- I've seen that mentioned, but should not normally be needed.

That's normal. Your programs, data should be retained. When upgrading, you may find some installed programs are broken and need repair or reinstallation. (I found Green Cloud printer, SecureAplus, Cybereason Ransomfree - the last two being security programs- needed reinstalling e.g. on upgrading to 1709). I also found a setting in Group policy I'd used to delay updates was causing a problem and needed a registry fix as the GUI had changed.

All your system files are replaced of course.

You will also find System Restore turned off.

1) As for Windows on C: and other drives: please note that this is the one and only drive Windows is residing on.
SSD C-drive.
All other drives are used for different purposes.

2) As for chkdsk c: /f
Note that I tried that, after reboot I checked the eventlogs (chkdsk and wininit). Strange enough - no entries...
Although I did saw a kind of 'checking... 100% completed' notification whilst starting.
anyway I initiated a chkdsk again. This time more was done and eventlog was created... weird eh ..

1. Yes, I use Macrium Reflect

3. AV and Firewall disabled: that I have not tried yet.

I will give the other matters a try (clean boot, etc.)

There are a few entries in the upgrade history and noticed a pop-up right bottom reminding me of to upgrade (I postponed it 3 days)

- irrespective of that, please use Minitool Partition Wizard to verify that please. Remember I know nothing about the history of your disks or your system: it is quite possible for Windows installs to place partitions on other disks if at any time there's not enough room on the system disk.

Also please run Hard Disk Sentinel. The checks on the physical disk, the file system and system files are all different things. However I doubt there'll be a problem - checks so far look good, and I wasn't expecting disk problems to be significant here.

The Update History just indicates attempts...

Helpful, but depends on whether you have an event log entry - worth checking.

AV- Emsisoft Internet Security is shown in your details. Consider searching for issues related to this and uninstalling this when upgrading. It's probably not necessary to install updates when upgrading. (Would be important if the updates post 1709 fix a significant problem for your system).

 

Maybe . . . maybe I got a little closer...
1. I deleted all the stuff - see your earlier post
2. I de-activated Windows Firewall and the AV-software
3. Used the USB thumbdrive (Media Creation Tool) - setup exe there.
all went fine and Windows did not report any non-compatible issues.
restarting
at the end of xx % completed, restarting again, and I got the error back.
Retoring previous version of Windows (Windows does this automatically).

I am not an expert on that though..

 

You definitely have an unusual layout with C: at front of Disk 1 (we haven't seen disk 0) and the EFI system partition in the position it's at. I recommend you heed dalchina and either post a screen shot of ALL of the Disk Management display (with columns sized to show all info) or best post a screenshot similarly of (free) MiniTool Partition Wizard's view of your disks.

Otherwise, we may be grasping at straws...

For that error number some find they need to update the BIOS.

And bearing in mind @Word Man's observation- history- how was Win 10 installed on this? I.e. how do you have the partitions arranged as they are? Normally Recovery is first..

The screenshot would also, as I've said, show how much free space you have- noting your error text.

 

Actually it doesn't matter what order your partitions are in as long as MSR is before C. You can put the ESP first, last or on a USB drive if you want.

You are getting a new recovery partition as 471MB isn't big enough that is all. It doesn't matter - you can delete all but the last one created. The last one created is normally the first one created to the RHS of C.

As for your upgrade problem try disconnecting all USB, uninstalling graphics drivers and try again. If not upload the SetUpErr.log and SetUpAct.log files.

note, there was no issue installing Windows 10 on Disk 1 at the time, so, as a non-expert I can only assume that upgrading to that disk/partition shouldn't be too much of a problem(?)
At least I see all kinds of files are downloaded on that partition.

Disk Management doesn't show all partitions. You need to run diskpart (select disk 1, list partition etc).

Interesting you have disk 0 active (indicating BIOS install).

I'd unplug them all (except 1) and make sure you have a decent booting system first.

 

Windows update might get confused since you have disk 0 which is an MBR disk set as "Active". Open Admin command:
diskpart
select disk 0
select par 1
inactive
exit

Except for the boot disk. No data disk should be set "Active"
