not sure how this will help since we cannot even install the update... it will not let us install 1803 without removing the mysterious app.

I have the same issue (deinstall "hybrid laptops with discrete GPU connected to display") with my Alienware 15 R3. Also updated NVIDIA and Intel graphic drivers and BIOS etc. The error is happening with Windows Update as well as with the latest Media Creation Tool.

Got this after clicking next. I have no idea how to uninstall this as this is a hardware feature, not software as far as I know.

  9. guy at geeksquad suggested this and worked for me with an Alienware 15 R3

download the windows media creation tool

    execute and it will update

when it proceeds to 'creating media', disconnect from the internet and should prevent issue with trying to update drivers and will advance past the 49% mark where it gets stuck

an hour later i'm back at the desktop and current with updates and no issues

    good luck

Same here. I managed to update by uninstalling and deleting drivers for both GPUs (Intel and Nvidia) while also disabling the internet to avoid automatic reinstall. Once the drivers are removed, the update will work. No need to even reboot. You can keep the internet offline during the whole process. Just make sure you have already downloaded the update before trying again. It keeps a cache in the system folder.

I had the same issue. I have an Alienware 15 R3. Failing with the same error as all of you at 49%.
But... my husband also has the same model and his update went through fine.

So it led me to wonder why?! the answer - He took "all the Alienware junk" off his and I hadn't!!

So I uninstalled Alienware update and digital delivery utility and just left Alienware command centre and Alienware onscreen display installed.

I also uninstalled the latest Nvidia driver, put my laptop into airplane mode and restarted. I let Nvidia put its basic driver back on and waited for everything else to load on my system (leaving airplane mode on). I don't personally feel this step is necessary, but if the above fails for you, then you can try it.

I then re-ran the windows update and it worked!!

So, personally I don't feel this is a microsoft fail, I think the common denominator of all the people with problems is Alienware, and those of us who have that Alienware update and digital delivery installed.

No, I would say Microsoft is to blame as well. I have encountered other installation errors on different cases (such as upgrading a VM to 1803). I believe this rollout to be rather sloppy. When you consider that all the apps you removed reinstall just fine on top of the new update, then you know that it is a Microsoft issue.

Microsoft is not to blame, its the 3rd party application. Same with any other software application. It has to be made compatible and work with Windows, not that Windows must work with the 3rd party application. That is a misconception that has been around for years. The fact that is works installed after a clean Windows install doesn't prove anything.

Back to the Alienware problem. I saw one post with the problem on the Dell forums. I linked this tenforums thread on the Dell post.

Again, several of the failures I have encountered do not even involve Alienware systems. Compared to the 2 previous releases, this one seems to have more issues. That is what's being pointed out. Plus, on this thread, Microsoft support is even asking users to remove monitor drivers (instead of video card drivers). We are talking about "Generic PnP Monitor" drivers.

Managed to install using the workaround provided by @bnlf and @nalo. I downloaded the media through the MSDN subscriber portal so did not use internet. One thing I did notice is that it did not work when I checked "Check for updates during install" even when there was no internet. So the second time around I unchecked that box. Install went without troubles, then I reinstalled:

    -Alienware Command Center
-GeForce Experience (with all nVidia game-ready drivers)
-Intel HD Graphics (was actually installed by Windows update)

I also left Alienware OSD alone and did not uninstall it, and the upgrade went fine.

Again, this is not an Alienware problem. This is an issue of the Microsoft software getting wonky with checking requirements, otherwise the software would have been unable to be reinstalled.
