Windows 10: 1903 Update is Resetting App Defaults

Hello, I am getting a W10 Education V 1903 computer ready for imaging, but I'm running into an issue where new users who login have several notifications that their apps have been reset. I have tried setting the app defaults via a local xml file pushed that is enabled with a local policy to prevent this, but that currently isn't working. The files being reset including Microsoft edge files, Microsoft-edge-holographic files, and default browser. Has anyone ran into similar issues like this? Any recommendations?

That is what MS is claiming.

If it is true, why isn't this forum overrun with 100s (if not 1000s) of users complaining about not being able to set defaults?

If MS blocked non-MS Apps, "all Hell would break loose".

MS is obviously using the "annoy users until they comply with our demands" strategy:

• Deliberately re-issuing blocked GWX updates every month (W7)
• Releasing GWX updates that are "accidentally" pre-selected (W7)
• The entire operating principle of GWX
• After every update, forcing (some) users to:
  • Check their privacy settings
  • Re-activate System Restore
  • Reset their chosen default programs

A sure fire way of slowing the adoption of W10 is to annoy users constantly.
IMO, part of the reason that:

• Vista (UAC) and W8 (Metro) were flops, was because they were annoying (not because the OS didn't work)
• W7 and XP were successes, was because they didn't annoy users

IrfanView works OK on my W10.

 

Default programs repeatedly reset to "MS" programs/apps


I had the same problem.
Possible causes:

1. Acrobat preference does not work and if you click on it, it will reset to Windows default acrobat reader with the message:
   
   
   
2. If Windows has update for Acrobat reader App, it will reset it to default.

Just set it from Control Panel->Default Programs->Set Your default programs
High lite Acrobat then click on: Set this program as default.

 

Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild


Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.
