  1. 2020-01 update for windows 1909 (KB4497165) has ruined my brand new laptop

EDIT: I’ve discovered the cause of the poor performance - the CPU is locked at 0.38GHz. Not sure why, though. Trying to suss that part out. I also finally got the Microsoft support page for that update to load - it’s a microcode update for Intel CPUs, so why is it being pushed on me?

EDIT 2: I discovered a post on HP’s support forum indicating a similar issue. That users steps to reproduce this behavior were:

    1. Plug in the power cable
    2. Put the laptop into sleep or hibernate
    3. Unplug the power cable [while the laptop is still asleep, mind you]
    4. Wake up the laptop, and it will be locked to 0.38GHz.
    5. Plugging in the power cable now will return the system to proper behavior, and so will rebooting while on battery only, with the power cable unplugged.

I want to note that for my experience, with this ASUS laptop, I have disabled Windows 10’s typical shutdown behavior [basically just hibernating] and so my laptop will perform a full shutdown every time, so I’m getting this peculiar CPU clock speed lock on a cold boot, while plugged in at least. In the process of attempting to recreate the steps outlined above, my system actually returned to proper behavior after putting it to sleep, then unplugging it, then waking it up. It was behaving before being plugged back in, and plugging it in did not adversely affect its behavior after that point.

(I’m just typing all this out just in case someone else has this problem and comes across this post)

(The original, irate post follows below)

I have a brand new ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15, with an AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS and 16GB of RAM, and after this update installed a few days ago on the 6th, I booted up my laptop today and it’s a lagging, stuttering mess.

It takes several minutes to boot from an NVME SSD, and the system is constantly lagging throughout regular use - it even takes about 20 seconds to pull down the PIN entry at the login page on a cold boot.

The system gave me no restore point, even though those are enabled, and attempting to uninstall the latest quality update (this very one) through the recovery menus only results in a hang.

Pulling up the task manager takes a few seconds, switching tabs takes a few seconds, and task manager is showing no resources being maxed out.

Have no idea what it mean but probably my older bios patch is now outdated and need the fix anyways!?
Will this again be another big hit on cpu's performance or a minor one!? It's time for me to upgrade my
laptop and buy a new one I guess.
