Windows 10: 3TB disk showing as 1TB

Discus and support 3TB disk showing as 1TB in Windows 10 Drivers and Hardware to solve the problem; Actually, I meant the physical label on the physical hard drive. I'm kinda stumped - any chance it's mislabeled (by manufacturer or seller)? This would... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Drivers and Hardware' started by winchesterstoke, Feb 15, 2016.

How difficult to exchange it? Buy at local shop, big retailer, amazon.uk ?

  3. It was amazon.co.uk, but want to rule out that there's a problem with my PC and the replacement will have the same problem.

Understood. I'm not the expert to diagnose your HDD and can't think of why Windows would see it wrong - it's so unusual to me that, if I were in your position, I'd see:

    1) Does any generic freeware (looks like no Toshiba HDD low level software I can find) HDD diagnostic tool get the same read on the disk capacity? or

    2) Can you connect the HDD to another PC temporarily to see what it shows there?

I read the reviews at amazon.co.uk for that drive (prior to you stating that's where you purchased) and saw no red flags there.

I can't think of why Windows would see the disk as having less than 2.72 TB capacity - perhaps another forum member can think of something.

Sorry I couldn't help more but I, myself, would be within an inch in this situation of exchanging it for another at Amazon.

  5. Well I put the disk into one of my NASs and it sees it fine as a 3TB disk.
So I've decided to cut my losses and leave the 3TB disk in the NAS, and move the disk from the NAS into my desktop. It doesn't solve the problem, and is not ideal, but is good enough!

    Thanks for your help!

You're welcome to whatever little help I could provide.

The question still remains, though. Someone will probably correct me, but I'm curious if running "winsat formal" from an elevated (admin) command prompt would have changed anything. Perhaps not.... something I would have tried for grins...
