Windows 10: 3tb drive works in win7, win 10 no.

Discus and support 3tb drive works in win7, win 10 no. in Windows 10 Drivers and Hardware to solve the problem; Hi , After doing a quick research on this topic, I also came to the same conclusion as Caledon Ken ( his post #8) that you should copy all data... 1. 3tb drive works in win7, win 10 no.

interesting you mention set to raid, as yes in bios is set to raid, not ahci. would changing that help?

i need the 3tb disc work in win7 and win10, it must or i will never run win10 on this pc.
raid is not setup, i get a bios prompt to do that but ignore it.

still copying. is there a 3rd party win10 utility that could fix without copying back over?

  2. About raid or AHCI,
    AHCI/RAID/SATA - Storage - Toms Hardware

poster said sata 5 and 6 ports wont be seen if set to sata mode?? I only have ide, raid or AHCI mode, dont see any 'sata' mode.
    .
However I can tell you all 6 sata ports work whether a hard disc or dvd writer is hooked up to any sata port. Hey, i dont have a clue why it is set to raid.

"When SATA is configured as [SATA Mode] in BIOS, only SATA ports 1-4 can be detected. Ensure to install the AHCI driver to detect and use SATA port 5-6 in AHCI mode under OS."

I suppose if I set to AHCI mode, and it cant boot, then I could switch it back.
Maybe can you install AHCI driver before switching mode in both win7 and win10?

Changing it to AHCI may help but will it break something - your Windows 7? ( I have Windows 7 on a RAID and so had never tried changing to AHCI .) That is my concern already expressed. I would leave it to other experts to dwelve on it.

  4. 3tb drive works in win7, win 10 no.

Found this here. Can win10 handle this on the fly?

How to Install AHCI Drivers in Windows 7 After Setup | TurboFuture

    • Once your clean install has loaded and installed any devices detected go to your manufacturer's website, download and install the chipset drivers only
    • Restart Windows
    • Go to Start Menu-> Control Panel-> Device Manager-> expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

If you don't know the name/number of your IDE/SATA controller, use the initially installed Microsoft driver for reference. Write it down on paper, just in case.

So, you should have something like: ATA Channel 0, ATA Channel 1, Intel 12345GM IDE/ATAPI Controller.

Or as it was in my case I had just the brand name and family name which was GBM, so that makes something like Intel GM-Family IDE Controller.

IMPORTANT: Search only and specifically for the controller brand+model displayed in your Device Manager as it may differ from the one advertised with your laptop. Also the drivers in your computer manufacturer's site may differ from this, as they were in my case. The AHCI driver from asus.com was for Intel N-10 chipset.. Thanks for that ASUS!
    • Now that you know that brand and model number, or family name, of your IDE Controller (ex. Intel 13245GM), simply Google "Intel 12345GM AHCI driver download" and one of the Top 3 results should be the page where you can download the driver.
advice: make sure you download from manufacturer sites (ex: intel.com), not potential fraud like.. ezdownloads2go.com
    • Now that you, hopefully, have found the required driver just unzip it in a folder of your liking. It should contain about 10 files with several .inf's along.
    • Go to Start Menu-> Control Panel-> Device Manager-> expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers-> right-click on your IDE Controller-> Update Driver Software..
    • Browse my computer for driver software
    • Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
    • Have Disk...
    • Specify the folder where you unzipped the driver files
    • Select the .inf file with AHCI in its file name
    • Click OK
    • Select your brand+model driver now that it is loaded in the manufacturer's list
Note: in case there is nothing shown uncheck "Show compatible hardware"
    • Click OK, wait loading and close the dialog window
    • DO NOT RESTART WINDOWS
    • Double-check that the IDE Controller has updated to the expected brand and model name
    • If it has not, repeat steps 7-17
    • Restart Windows
    • Enter BIOS-> IDE Controller Settings
    • Set your IDE Controller mode from IDE to AHCI
    • And, ta-da, your Windows 7 installation is now running in AHCI mode
    • Install any other peripherals and programs you need

Yep @ dalchina. That is relevant only if the OP wants to recover data. Here he can access and see the data with Windows 7. So no recovery aspect comes into picture.

  7. for win10 to go to ahci
IDE to AHCI Windows 10 - Windows 10 Support

Yes, all this would be painful! I suppose. but is possible. Win10 seems easier.

3tb drive works in win7, win 10 no.

You also have to enable AHCI drivers in Windows 7 first following the procedure you dug up. Doing it only for Windows 10 will break your Windows 7.

I would suggest that you do it first with Windows 7 following the procedure you dug up - well dug *Smile - in post #17. I would think that after that the AHCI drivers will automatically get installed in Windows 10 when you boot into it. ( It may not happen viceversa) If not you can do that exercise in post#20.

In anycase have a back up of Windows 7 and all your data in that drive before you meddle *Tongue.

  9. proof all options greyed out. begs the question, if you got this disk, you would be stuck to make it function just using win10 builtin gui tool. disk part might work. i right clicked the 3tb disc.

  10. well dang it. win10 still cant deal with it greyed out options.

i booted win7 and erased partition. booted win 10, this is what i still see. right click greyed out, so i am stuck.
    it is getting too hard.

I made it work using diskpart, me, not anyone else`s ideas.
some of you did not believe me either.
How to use diskpart to format a drive to GPT

  11. Ok, still there is a MAJOR problem. After I made the disk work in win10, I booted win7.
Win7 can not see the disk in file manager.

Goto disk management, immediately message pops up saying disc 1 needs to setup as GPT.
So I did, then had to format disk.

SO I CAN NOT RUN WIN10, as it can not see the disk if win7 formats it, and win7 can not see the disk if win10 formats it. BUG in windows or is it a feature!

Does anyone have a solution? is this because of AHCI versus raid? I can imagine going to the trouble of switching and it still wont work. There is an incompatibility exposed here, does ANYONE believe me? IMO, this is a bug in windows 10, if it can not show a partition created in win7.

As pointed out, your MBR for both 7 and 10 are on Disk 2. This only happens when you have a dual boot setup on a single drive. The later OS, in this case windows 10 becomes the primary OS and therefore has the MBR. Yet you say it wasn't but the proof is in your attachment.

You can try using MiniTool Partiton Wizard and see if you can move the MBR to the C drive.

  13. 3tb drive works in win7, win 10 no.

I never had both drives connected when I installed either os. Each was unplugged so only one drive was in the system during the install. Each drive can boot independently. Right now I select which os to start by selecting which drive to boot from when powering on by hitting escape key which gives me the boot menu in the bios.

What do people mean by it shows in my pic? The win10 drive only shows a solid partition?? The win7 shows multiple partitions?
I first installed win7, afterwards win10 with the win7 drive disconnected.

I am going to try converting to AHCI. I have the AMD chipset drivers, the AHCI driver is in the AHCI folder and has a 64bit win7 listed. If I can get win7 booting AHCI then win10 looks easy.

IF I disconnect disc2 with win7, and boot win10 drive, and then show diskmanager, will this prove anything? From what your saying you think this will be impossible?

on the reboot, win7 redetected the sata controller, now on ahci. next is win10
