    Disk usage is intermittently 99-100% and Task Manager has pinpointed Windows Defender Service as the culprit. So, how should I deal with this? I'd rather not have to somehow disable it altogether (it won't even let me end the task) but I'm very concerned that this is going to prematurely kill my HDD, and I'd far rather deal with some malware than that. I prefer MBAM anyway...

    Once so far, this has been severe enough to entirely lock the system up. I'd rather it not happen again.

    Edit: This is not due to conflict between Win Defender and MBAM (not 'real-time').

  2. Allow me to permanently disable windows defender

    Windows defender constantly keeps my disk usage for my laptop at 100% - if windows defender is running or on in the background in any state, my disk is at 100% usage. (the Windows antimalware service)

    Obviously this has severe repercussions of my laptop being slow and unresponsive because the disk is being used up by something else, along with shortening the disks life.

    disabling it in the settings only disables it for a "while" and it automatically turns itself back on after a period of time.

    allow me to disable it permanently - for some reason I don't have permission to change the service to disabled despite being the admin and only account on the computer.

    Im sick of this because my laptop is nearly unusable for a good 2 minutes after turning on/waking up because of windows defender. and even then is still slow to do things.

    (system and compressed memory also take up a pile of disk usage as well)

    Windows 10 High HDD usage

    Hello,

    I have a problem with the Disk high usage rate(About 99% each time I start or wake the laptop from sleep).

    The problem-makes is the program called Service host:Local System(network retricted)(9) or (10) it depends, which bumps-up the HDD usage to about 99 or 100 making the system a bit unusable. Do you have any solution for this? 99-100% Disk Usage, Windows Defender Service :D

    Hi and welcome to Tenforums.

    MBAM is an anti-malware program, while Defender is an anti-virus. MBAM works alongside AVs in harmony on a system - even the Pro (paid) version which is always active (as opposed to the free/passive version).

    Personally, (and this is just my personal opinion), I would suspect that Defender is having difficulty with something lurking on your system.

    One thing to do, would be to download and install a 3rd-party AV (like Avast Free, or the 30-day trial of ESET NOD), which will auto-disable Defender as it takes over. Once it is installed and fully updated, I would run a complete scan, including scheduling a boot-time scan (which can be found in the settings in Avast.)

    If you have any problems installing Avast/ESET (or whatever program you choose), it could be a sign of something bigger.

    You could also run the System File Check to make sure everything is intact.

  5. This started straightaway after the forced upgrade to 10 from 7. System was squeaky clean and fully operational before. And everything I download, goes through my secondary system and MBAM before its moved to this one. It's clean.

    And I just ran across this. Hopefully unchecking 'run with highest priority' in the 'Windows Defender' tasks will do the trick.

    Curiously, the 'Mircosoft Antimalware' task is configured for 'Windows 7, Windows Server 2008'... and "The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)"...

  7. Ugh.... what I did, didn't do much. Still slammed for about 10 minutes after boot. However, so far, I haven't seen it do this at any other point like before (small consolation I suppose). But this is still very frustrating. I don't like it one bit. And I suppose M$ shall never address it. Guess I just have to hope it won't trash my HDD (don't plan on SSD for a good long while). Sucks.

    If anyone figures out the magic workaround please do sound off here... don't care how old the thread gets, I'd appreciate it.
