  1. A media driver your computer needs is missing

Recently my windows 10 install broke on windows update, figured it's probably time to reinstall instead of fixing it so I download the iso from microsoft (windows 10 2004), it installs fine under a VM, the ISO appears to work.

so I write the image to my usb stick using dd:

    dd if=Downloads/Win10_2004_English_x64.iso of=/dev/sdd bs=4M status=progress

it boots just fine, I select my language, click "Install Now" and on the "Gathering Information" step I get hit with "A media driver your computer needs is missing"

Well that's odd, shift+f10 diskpart, it appears that it can see all connected drives so it should be an issue, figure I'll rebuild the gpt on the target drive anyway just for good measure.Okay, whatever. I point it at networking, SATA controller, and chipset drivers respectively (as provided by MSI) but no dice. Okay, what if I reboot now that I've changed the GPT, maybe it's just cranky? Still nothing, maybe it can't read the usb... but then why can I browse the files on the usb when looking for drivers? Either way MSI doesn't have a download for the usb controller drivers, and 1803 installed just fine using the exact same setup (including the same usb stick.

This is supposed to be a hybrid image, no? It should work fine to dd it.

But fine, what if we format the stick as FAT32, set the partition ID to ef00 (EFI system, since GPT doesn't have a bootable flag) and copy the files over... oh right, okay the install.wim file is 4.5GB, thanks. Appreciate it.

After some internet searching I found some supposed idea that you can format it with the partitioning scheme of a FAT32 EFI system and a larger NTFS partition to hold the sources folder (with only the boot.wim file on the system partition's sources folder and an ei.cfg containing [CHANNEL]\n Retail), but this doesn't even register as a bootable drive by the UEFI firmware.

    # gdisk /dev/sdd
    o
    w
    Y
    # cgdisk /dev/sdd
    [New]
    1G
    ef00
    [New]
    0700
    [Write]
    # mkfs.vfat -F 32 /dev/sdd1
    # mkfs.ntfs -f /dev/sdd2

    Or, that is to say:

    • make a new GPT partition table (o)
    • write it (w)
    • YES, I do want to overwrite everything on the drive (Y)
    • open the disk in a partition editor
    • make a new one, size 1GB partition ID EFI system partition
    • make another new one, of all the remaining size, type microsoft basic data
    • format the EFI partition as FAT32
    • format the second partition as NTFS

Followed by copying all the contents of the iso save the sources folder to the FAT32 partition, making a sources folder on it, copying boot.wim manually to it, then making rhe ei.cfg file as advertised.

Then copying the sources folder from the iso straight to the NTFS partition.

But that doesn't even boot, so whoever wrote those instructions likely just played a prank on me to waste my time, tried exfat too for the funs even though I know UEFI doesn't typically support it, and no iso is going to be built to boot from exfat (i.e will likely be missing the drivers) and as expected that didn't boot either.

And no, I can't split the WIM file with DISM on merit of not having an available windows installation.

I'm genuinely at a loss here, does it produce a log somewhere that tells me which piece of hardware is missing a driver?

Come on microsoft, give me something to work with here -- you're making me wish for an error code, at least that's a trail of (pretty crummy) crumbs to follow.

What do they want me to do, install it under KVM and then dd the entire disk image to a real disk? That's no doubt going to work juuuuust fine (read: it'll likely panic the moment I try to boot it)

Or to summarize what has been tried and hasn't worked

    • Providing all drivers I have access to to the installer.
    • USB port boogaloo, the return of the swapping voodoo.
    • Various partitioning schemes
    • dd

I'm genuinely at a loss here, makes me wonder if it's even worth reinstalling windows or if I should just drop the few softwares I want to run entirely and dedicate the second SSD to linux as well.

Even windows 95 wasn't this cranky, and windows 95 was very cranky.

A media driver your computer needs is missing.

    Hi Tyrell,

Are you trying to install Windows? If yes, check this steps and see if it works.

    Method 1. Re-plug your USB

    1. Click Cancel on the pop-up error you've receive.
    2. Unplug the USB drive from your PC when the Windows installation returns on your screen.
    3. Re-plug USB and try to install Windows.
Method 2. Look for another USB port on your device.

Method 3. If the issue still persists, you can change the settings in BIOS. BIOS configuration settings might be the reason why you're getting that error message.

    1. Change the USB 3.0 support
      • Sometimes the install media doesn’t have native support for USB3.0. If there is any settings for USB 3.0 support in BIOS, change it to
        Auto or Disabled.
    2. Change the SATA to IDE
      • Wrong SATA mode can also cause the problem. If your machine is using IDE, but the install media boots with SATA, it can result in the problem. You can try the instructions below to change it in BIOS or UEFI (the specific steps
        may vary from different computers):
        1. Boot your computer into BIOS, then go to Advanced or Storage Configuration (or Drive Configuration or IDE Configuration).
        2. Go to SATA Mode (or Set SATA As, or SATA Configuration).
        3. Change its option to IDE or Compatible or
          ATA
          .
        4. Save the settings and try to install Windows again.
Note: Please refer to your device manufacturer for assistance in changing your BIOS/firmware settings.

We'll be here when you post back.
