  1. "Access is Denied" when trying to view contents of shared folder

So I bit the bullet and "upgraded" my laptop from Windows 7 to 10. I expected to find a few things that didn't work anymore, but not so soon as this. I keep it in sync with my desktop PC (running XP) by net-sharing its hard drive, with permission for full control granted to its "administrators" group. I mount it on my desktop PC, where I have the same username and password for my primary administrator account. When it ran Windows 7 this all worked well, but now whenever I try to list or open its files I get "Access is denied." Any ideas?

Interestingly, I still can access the hard drive on my desktop PC while sitting at my laptop. It is only the vice-versa that fails, accessing the hard drive on my laptop PC while sitting at my desktop.

On my laptop, Windows Firewall is "off" for private networks, and it considers my home network to be "private."

    :)

  2. Destination Folder Access Denied

I have a Windows 10 PC. When I try to copy folders & files from my PC hard drive to an external drive on my network, I get the following message: "Destination Folder Access Denied. You need permission to perform this action." I can view all of the
files that are on the external drive. However, I cannot save anything into the external drive and I cannot copy or move files and folders to the external drive. This is very frustrating. It sort of defeats the purpose for having a share drive hooked up
    to a home network.

    Nokia Ovi suite won't install!

I'm trying to follow these instructions, but...

Running under Windows 7. If I try to access the folder C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS, I get an error message

If I click on [Continue], then I get

If I try to change the properties using the security tab for this folder, I get

Clicking on 'Continue' loops this message.

    Any suggestions?

"Access is Denied" when trying to view contents of shared folder

From the XP PC, if you open a CMD or Run box and type in \\win10pcname\users\
    what do yo get ?
If nothing helpful, create a second user in XP, logon to it
and have the win 10 laptop prompt you for credentials when you retry.

  5. The network name of my Windows 10 PC is "Pasco-1558"
As to what I get, please see this screen shot:

UPDATE: In my post of yesterday, I had omitted the trailing slash from Dave's suggested command. It makes all the difference in the world. Without it, I got "The network path was not found." But with it, I get "'\\pasco-1558\users\' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." See updated screen shot below:

In Windows 10/control panel/Network and Sharing (advanced settings) is the the current profile "private"?
Is Discovery on? Do you have any third party A/V or Firewall?
If you do an IPCONFIG /ALL from the elevated CMD prompt, what is the "node type"

Beyond, these, I'm out of idea's, but I expect something in the Win10 settings is to blame.

"Access is Denied" when trying to view contents of shared folder

Hi Rich, I've also got an XP and a Windows 10 PC. I've tried to see if I can create a scenario similar to yours,
but so far my attempts to share individual folders in Windows 10 is successful.
Are you trying to share the whole system drive? I'm wondering if that's an issue. It's not "best practice"
because you end up sharing c:\windows and all that.

Can you create a new folder and see if it's available on the XP box? I created a new folder outside of c:\users
and copied one folder of mp3 files into it. (eg. c:\test_shr) Right click on your newly created folder/properties
and select the share tab/"Advanced Sharing". Give it a name in the "share name" box. Select permissions.

On my PC only "everyone" was in the "group or user names" - I left it like this and, put a tick mark in "full control",
"change" and "read". OK all the way out.

Right click the Windows start button/control panel/administrative tools/computer management.
Make sure your new share is showing up in shares/shared folder.
Try to access it from the XP machine.

  9. Dave thank you very much for working with me on this. I think your most recent questions are helping me narrow down the problem. My emotional state is shifting from despair to excitement now. See my answers interleaved.

Yes, I am sharing the root of the C: drive, but only on my private network and there I limit the access to myself only (just the group "Administrators"). I trust myself. There are about a dozen folders in the root on the laptop I want to update and it would be unwieldy to share them one by one.

I did it twice with two different results.

    • For one folder, (C:\Pasco) I went immediately to Advanced Sharing and shared it with just group Administrators. When I tried to access it remotely, I got "Access Denied" as expected.
    • For another folder (C:\Sounds) I clicked the default "Share" button and that shared it with "Everyone." And ta-da! I could in fact access that from my XP desktop. Not surprising. Next I went to Advanced Sharing, added "Administrators" and removed "Everyone". After I clicked OK all the way out, my XP desktop was locked out.

So I conclude that shares with "Everyone" work, and it is limiting the share to "Administrators" which gives "Access Denied." Which means that the Win 10 laptop is not recognizing me (same username and password) as a member of its Administrators group.

Of course, "Everyone" is not acceptable for C:\ as discussed above.

I will try more experiments and get back to you.

  10. Dave, could you please try this experiment? On your Win10 machine, please remove "Everyone" so that only "Administrators" remains, and click OK all the way out. Then on your XP machine, try again to access the share and let me know the results.

Mine also fails with "access is denied" if I change the target permissions to "Administrators" in Windows 10.
I'll research a little more to see if I can find anything.

I have managed to capture this event from the event viewer:

"Access is Denied" when trying to view contents of shared folder

Well to share a folder of Vista or higher with Windows XP you must go to Advanced Sharing Options and Turn off password protected sharing. Also make sure that the shared folder gives full access to Administrators. If this doesn't work you have to also enable full access for Everyone (for certain folders in C, not the whole drive). This is also true for the personal folders (Documents, Pictures etc). Even if you have shared them, you must give full access to open them from XP or you get an Access Denied error. Since you will be giving full access to everyone, be careful which folders you share. Remove access (from security settings) to sensitive folders that you don't want others to see.

Hi Rich, I've got to the bottom of it, it's to do with extra default security; when UAC is enabled (default)
Administrator context over the network is not honored. See this registry change to allow the admin user
    context to be honored -
How to access a network shared folder with admin privilege when UAC enabled?

2nd option is to completely disable UAC on Windows 10 (I'll leave it up to you to weigh up the pros and cons)
It also needs a registry change:
Settings App UAC Off - Page 2 - Windows 10 Forums

Option three, you could simply add "users" as well as "adminstrators" to the shares permissions "group
    or user names" -

Interesting problem, never seen this one before !

I haven't tried in Windows 10, but in Windows 8 disabling completely the UAC with the registry hack makes all Windows apps to stop working. You cannot load any modern app or the Windows Store. I set it to the minimum level, I don't disable it. As long as I grant full access to Everyone, I can open my shared folder from Windows XP and even Windows 98 (installed in a virtual machine).
