Accidental drag and drop of files to $RECYCLE.BIN - How do I recover them?

I'm on 1903 just updated prior to the problem. I have turned on the option to display hidden files and folders. I was dragging a folder to a new location. The drop point was the left hand directory pane near the top. The window scrolled as the folder was dropped and the folder was moved to $RECYCLE.BIN. Opening the "Recycle Bin" you can NOT see the folder. Using windows explorer I do see the folder in "$RECYCLE.BIN". I have tried copying and moving with both explorer and PowerShell but I'm denied permission.

How can I get the files back?

    :)

    recycle bin

    Hi George,

To prevent your files from being deleted from the Recycle Bin, we suggest increasing the maximum file size your Recycle Bin can keep by following the steps below:

    • Right click on the Recycle Bin icon.
    • Under the Settings for selected location, select Custom size.
    • Fill up the box for your allotted maximum file size for your Recycle Bin.
Let us know if you need further assistance.

  3. I accidentally deleted an item and went to the recycle been to recover it.

    Hello,

I request you to check if the option "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" is selected.

    Follow the steps below:

    • Right click on the recycle Bin.
    • Select Properties.
    • Check if the option "Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" is selected.
    • Also check if the "Custom size" is more than the size of the file which you deleted.

If the files got deleted from the Recycle Bin also then I'm afraid there is no way of recovering permanent deleted files. Please get back to us if this option is not selected and still the files are not in the Recycle Bin.

I hope this helps you. If you have any further queries, feel free to contact us. We will be happy to help you.

    Thank you.
