Windows 10: Account Settings out of date on email problem

I had to change the password on my att email today due to a possible hacker issue. After I changed the password, I also changed it on my yahoo account. After I rebooted my computer and tried to access email, I got an error msg stating "account settings are out of date". The options were to manage or fix. When I select Fix, it takes me over to my yahoo account. So I log in to my yahoo account as requested. Then I got the following message in the Mail app "something went wrong" "we noticed that the email address you've used to sign in doesn't match the email address we have for this account. To fix the problem, delete this account and add it again."


Okay... so the help files say to delete an account you go to settings, click the account and the "delete account" option shows up on the account settings dialog window. However, because my account has "attention required" in red, when I select the account I get a popup menu instead offering "fix account" and "change settings". "Fix Account" starts to invoke the dialog but then gives the "something went wrong" dialog (no way to delete here, just "close"). "Change Settings" invokes the account settings dialog, but there is no "delete account" option, just "change mailbox sync settings". I keep going through their instructions, but I just keep going back to the same screens.


I am NOT good at fixing problems...not a techie at all. Why does my att.net email address issue with out of date account settings keep taking me to my yahoo.com email account? How do I fix this? I'm so lost!!!

Unauthorized Emails from my account?

It is more than likely that your email account was hacked, either by a virus sniffing your password, or just simply hacked.

Either way, change your password on your email account. Unfortunately the damage by already be done. They already have your contact list and your email address associated with that contact list. There is nothing stopping them from sending out emails using their own SMTP servers to everyone on your contact list and claiming the emails are from your email address. They don't actually have to have access to your yahoo account or even any yahoo server to send emails to people that come from your address.

If this is with a MS, Apple or Gmail account you have two-step/two-factor verification on it? If so you'll need an app specific password for the email account.
I had that error message on my iCloud email account in Win 10 mail app & this cured it for me.

 

Unauthorized Emails from my account?

Embarrassingly, everyone on my email list received spam originating from my account, which is Yahoo based. A scan with MSE found two trojans, a Java/Rowindal.A and a Downloader:Java/OpenStream.W.

Are these the source of my unwanted email traffic? Would someone opening this email be infected with the same problems? Could there be more dangerous underlying threats.

Hell, I have quite a few high dollar clients in my list. I always treat people's addresses like they were unlisted numbers, and don't send frivolous "Hey how are ya" junk. This is mortifying.*Eek!
