Holy crap - I had put the partition on same drive as my OS, and turned off pc to carry on today.

When I turned on PC, it booted straight to the Recovery WinPE drive even though I had not changed any boot sectors etc.

My bios is pretty crap with very few options ie set pc to eufi or legacy, or change boot order with no option to select individual hard drives (have to choose via msconfig).

I ran macrium and went to fix boot problems, and it saw the windows 10, rebuilt boot sectors, and I rebooted.

WTF - still booted to Recovery drive!

I could not find anyway to boot to windows (as a last resort I even deleted partition and used Macrium again - still failed).

Just used Macrium to restore pc from an image backup - good old Macrium!

I shall stick to Rescue disk being on a usb stick!

The procedure is clearly stated to be used on another HD/SSD, not on your Windows OS drive. To use it with Windows OS drive, you'd have to setup as dual boot.

Yeah I realised that after the event and intended to change that today, not expecting just creating the partition and switching pc off would affect anything.

I still do not understand that. I sent your mail last night, about no need to make partition active on a eufi drive and stopped.

Somehow my pc decided to boot from the Recovery Winpe partition. Even booting from Macrium only showed the Windows 10 drive - nothing else!

Again if you read post #25, middle paragraph, I've already said for GPT disk, there's no such thing as "Active" partition, You cannot set it, only for MBR disk type.

Steve, I just now saw this, since I'm a user of both Macrium and Acronis, what low level disk drivers did Acronis install? I'd like to be aware of them. Thanks!!

Yeah thanks but I followed that last night when I saw your reply (did not make that clear in my responses above).

I sort of knew this but had forgotten. I had already done the change based on posts before I saw the guide.

Thanks for your time and help.

I will try later one more time using hdd instead.

Yes Steve their is not one little trace of Acronis left anywhere on my computer. I used like 3 different programs to uninstall Acronis. Main one is Revo uninstaller Pro, which also removes any leftovers in the registry, then I use my search program called Everything, which will search for any name you put in, or even part of a name on all your hard drives. then I also ran 2 of my other registry cleaners, to double check the registry again. I NEVER trust any program to completely remove all of its files. A lot of programs don't,... not just Acronis. Trust me Steve, their is not one trace of ANYTHING left by Acronis. *Wink
I did find all kinds of leftovers bty......all gone now. *Smile

  11. It seems as though I did! I am going to give Macrium Reflect Free a shot. My needs are simple. I just want to be able to create images of several laptops we use at work and restore the image once we purchase new, identical laptops to save time. We store the images on an external drive, but would like to move them to a NAS.

Not assuming anything on how you will try it - just wanted to point out licensing terms for FREE may be different for Business versus Home use - I know the link for Business will take you to a trial version.

    Hi there

I would suggest to a lot of people that the best way to run backups etc is to use a STAND ALONE bootable USB / DVD. The reaon for this is that you don't have all the problems of installing stuff on your machine which might (as per acronis) come with a lot of services doing goodness knows what - as well as "phoning home" regularly for activation / licence issues - which always give problems at the most inconvenient moment.

In this regard Acronis is fine run from the bootable media. I didn't like the fact that the bootable Macrium software could only RESTORE an image but NOT MAKE ONE.

Taking client images (laptops etc) for single user machines should be easy and booting a stand alone backup / restore program once in a while shouldn't be a hassle.

Now backing up a NAS is another whole issue -- haven't solved that one yet -- I just have some of the multi-media files archived off to separate 2 / 3TB portable USB3 drives -- but the idea of backing up say 16TB of data (don't have it yet but NAS could easily store this amount) is another whole exercise.

BTW Samsung will shortly come out with a 10 TB SSD !!! (yes no typo !! 10 TB SSD's !!). WD already has HDD's of 10 TB.

@those who say you'll never need that much data --I think a certain wealthy and well known Mr B, Gates said once you will never need more than 640K of memory !!!).

My audio collection alone is now over 900GB (all FLAC - I HATE highly compressed music) so storage use does grow inexorably - especially as price decreases and speed increases.

    @Word Man

better saying I think "The Price of education is expensive -- but the price of ignorance is Astronomical" !! -- not a dig at you of course --just commenting on your signature.

Macrium makes images fine from bootable media - can you expand on this in case misunderstanding you?

    Hi there.

I'll have another look at that -- I'm sure the FREE version had some restrictions --but it was a while ago since I last looked as I've been using Acronis bootable systems.

    Cheers
