  1. Acronis True Image to restore after W10 install??

I'll look at that after I do the re-restore. I don't think that's it, but certainly could be a possibility.

I read some more in the help for Acronis and saw that I should have checked restore disk signature which I hadn't done on the initial restore.

And I don't have any peripherals attached to the HP other than the WD EHD I used to do the restore with for info.

Ok. It's just so weird that W10 won't install on that PC. I just installed Win 10 on my 7 year old hp laptop running on AMD Turion cpu and it went smoothly. But it's 32-bit though. Did you try the 32 bit? Maybe that will work.

  3. Well, I'm restored and booting properly. Still not sure why it didn't work as it was supposed to the first time though I'm beginning to think I 'assigned' something wrong the first time I tried it. Otherwise why would the USB stick just boot and take me to Windows instead of to the Acronis stuff?

I'm probably going to leave this alone as far as the TP goes and just use the virginized version in the VM.

As to why it won't install as an upgrade and run as the only OS, I sure don't know. Has to be something that it doesn't like, probably some driver, possibly the Beats audio stuff.

  4. Acronis True Image to restore after W10 install??

Could you post a link to where you read the "restore disk signature" on the Acronis site ?
I have not heard of this before and would like to understand it.

  5. I didn't read it on the web, it was in the help that is part of the Acronis True Image 2014 software. It was in the help about restore options.

  6. OK, as usual I misunderstood. I will look for it.

When I installed Win 10 in a VM the 64 bit version would not work for me either. Once I tried the 32 bit as a member suggested, it went in easily, no driver problems or anything else.
I don't think your Beats stuff would stop it.

  7. I don't think the Beats stuff would either.

But I'm in the process of trying it again. Just because I could, I went and downloaded the 64-bit ISO again. This time it was a little bigger than the last time. I got to wonder if I possibly had a bad download previously or not.

Also this time I disabled the malware resident program thinking there is a possibility it interfered.

I'm a bit away from the last boot, but will report back whichever way it turns out.

Acronis True Image to restore after W10 install??

I don't think Disk Signature had anything to do with your problem.

  9. Yeah, further reading led me to the same conclusion finally.

But now after trying again to upgrade to W10, I'm in worse trouble.

Now the blasted computer won't boot the Acronis boot USB stick!

But I'm not going to do anything until tomorrow. I'm too frustrated and irritated at this point so it is time to take a step back. Watch some mindless drivel on TV, have a great cup of coffee.

Then tomorrow do the CT scan, play a round of golf, and THEN attack this all again! *Sad

Now it's time to try the "Disable Secure Boot" trick.... tomorrow...

    Cheers!

  11. Good choice, get a fresh start tomorrow. Maybe you will think of something in the meantime.
    You'll get it.

  12. You know how some things just won't let you sleep? This was one of them. After reading this I had gone to bed, but couldn't sleep. The whole thing was bugging me to no end.

So I used my Acronis boot USB stick on my Surface Pro to test it and it worked, so I knew the stick was fine.

So then into the BIOS stuff. Disabled UEFI and enable Legacy boot and then tried to boot to the stick. VOILA`!!

Worked like a charm. I'm restoring my W8.1 image as I type but will probably go to bed and let it finish on its own.

I had tried just disabling UEFI secure boot before, but never enabled Legacy, and it wouldn't boot the stick. Oddly the first time I used the stick on a previous restore, it would boot fine with secure boot enabled.

And of course, I'm documenting what I have to do for each computer to make this work as getting to BIOS and such is a bit different on each.

  13. Acronis True Image to restore after W10 install??

Yeah, I know I said I got the restore started and was going to bed. Well, I did. Then I woke up again and had to check.

Everything back to W8.1 again and it was an image I had created just before I tried the upgrade to W10 TP, so everything is very current.

    Glad that's over!!

For those that responded with suggestions, thanks a bunch. You'll never know how much it really helped in the process.

Now, try it for the last time with UEFI disabled when you got more time to waste...*Smile

  15. Time wasting is one of those great things about retirement!! *Smile

While I might try W10 again outside of a VM on this machine, it would be a dual-boot so I don't have to go through this stuff again. And it will be quite awhile before that happens (I hope!).
