Action Center, Network, Sound icons, and Date/Time in system tray unresponsive to...

    Hi,

The subject line pretty much explains the issue. When I left-click on any of the icons mentioned, nothing happens, meaning I can't use any of the interfaces connected with these because they don't open.

Just to clarify, none of these are missing, and they behave appropriately otherwise (highlighting on mousing over, reordering the icons, and a context menu appearing on right-clicking). Other system icons are present and do work as expected, such as "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media", and Windows Security, but as far as I can tell the specific ones I described do not.

Other methods that should open Action Center (right-clicking and choosing "Open Action Center") and the network interface (Settings -> Network and Internet -> Status -> Show available networks) also fail.

Windows is fully updated (as of this being posted), and I've tried a couple of likely-seeming solutions, like restarting my PC and restarting explorer.exe, but nothing has worked so far.

    So, any suggestions? Thanks.

    :)

Change appearance of the Action Center Icons in System Tray

I find the simple flat Windows 10 icons for the Action Center in the System Tray, for example,
Action Center, Network, Sound icons, and Date/Time in system tray unresponsive to... [IMG]
    or
Action Center, Network, Sound icons, and Date/Time in system tray unresponsive to... [IMG]
, very difficult to see and differentiate.

I know that one can change the appearance of icons for other items in the system tray but I have not been able to locate the appropriate .dll or .exe file for the Action Center Icon so that I can change the actual appearance of those icons. Is there a way to change the appearance of these particular icons? Where are these Action Center icons stored?

System tray icon flyouts not working, unable to use action center, wireless network list, cortana, etc

I woke up this morning to find that my Surface Pro running Windows 10 is completely gimped. Windows icons in the system tray and taskbar that are supposed to have flyouts (action center, volume control, wireless network list, Cortana, etc) do not work. They
respond to right clicks and non-windows system tray icons like google drive respond correctly. This seems to only affect windows icons that are supposed to open a context sensitive flyout (like when you click on volume control and a volume slider pops out,
or when you click on wireless icon and a list of wireless networks flys out).

To make matters worse, my Surface Pro is connected to a neighbor's "xfinity wifi" network instead of my own, and without the network list I have no way to change it, thus my device can't even go online or use my home network, rendering it useless.

I've found several other posts online of people having similar problems but no actual solution:

Action Center and Wireless network list wont show

Action Center/Windows Update/Flyouts/MORE will NOT work in Windows 10 PLUS No Login Box on Safe Mode, Inaccessible boot device

Action Center not opening in Win 10

Here's a post saying an update from June was supposed to have fixed this problem: Microsoft pushes fix for unresponsive flyouts in Windows 10

Change appearance of the Action Center Icons in System Tray

Hello @rklevy, welcome to tenforums.com! Action Center, Network, Sound icons, and Date/Time in system tray unresponsive to... :)

You can't change those icons. They reside in one of the highest permission system files. You'll nuke your OS if you try!
