Windows 10: Activation after hardware upgrade (two versions)

Recently upgraded PC with new Mobo and CPU

Verified that Windows 10 was activated prior to change over and install. Used USB bootable from Windows to install.

Install went fine and logged into Microsoft account but Windows won't activate

In the MS account devices page, I now show two devices. The first one is the new version of the PC and the second the old.

According to the Device Info, the new is Windows 10 Core Version 1809 and the old is Windows 10 Home Version 1803.

How do I rectify this to activate my Windows without purchasing a new copy?

Was Windows 10 activated before re-installing it?

Along with the suggestions provided by Greg, you can also refer the steps below.



The only hardware changes that can negatively impact activation status once you upgrade to free version are the changes to the:

• CPU
• TPM
• Motherboard replacement

The following changes are examples of hardware changes that will NOT impact the activation status:

• HDD/SSD
• Video card
• Adding extra memory

If you replace the CPU, TPM, or Motherboard you may have to re-activate but this will not require a purchase of Windows 10.

i followed the troubleshooter steps but something goes wrong and it just says oops try again later...

any suggestions?

Activation after new hardware upgrades?

Right - my point was to see what would happen if I tried the OS from one system on a totally different motherboard, and it went better than I expected, other than the activation - which I expected. I did chat with a Microsoft rep today online and he confirmed that after the hardware upgrade on a free Win10 upgrade that they (Mircosoft) will have to remote access my system to verify the proper key, etc. before they can reactivate it.
