Windows 10: Activation and digital licensing

I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 purchased with windows Vista Pre-installed. This was replaced with a purchased version of windows 7 and then with windows 8 also purchased both activated by the 25 digit product key that came with the product in the normal fashion.

Windows 8 was updated through the update service to 8.1 and shortly thereafter to windows 10 when it was released on general issue.

With a few minor issues the system has updated and operated OK since then and was included with other devices on my Microsoft account device list.

I now wish to dispose of this laptop by giving it away but from reading various articles I am confused as to how the new owner will fair if it becomes necessary to re install windows 10 because the activation code is not available to pass on to him/her and the PC will no longer be associated with my Microsoft Account. I have so far been unable to find documentation to adequately describe how this happens.

Does the fact that I also can't update this PC to version 1803 windows and it is still running version 1607 have any bearing on this subject. Every time a ask it to check for updates it reports that it is up to date.

When you upgraded from a previous version of Windows or receive a new computer preinstalled with Windows 10, what happened is the hardware (your PC) will get a digital entitlement, where a unique signature of the computer will be stored on Microsoft
Activation Servers. The Windows 7 or Windows 8 genuine license you were previously running will be exchanged for a diagnostics key.

Anytime you need to reinstall Windows 10 on that machine, just proceed to reinstall Windows 10. It will automatically reactivate. You will prompted to enter a product key a couple times through the installation, click I don't have
a key and Do this later.

There is no need to know or get a new key, but if you have issues with Digital Licensing or the Activation Troubleshooter, you can utilize an existing Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product key you already own to
reactivate if necessary. or use the reset function in Windows 10.
