Windows 10: Activation - lost after Win10 "refresh" - original Product Key was Win7, upgraded to Win10...

Hi, can you help me with this please. I am running Win10 on an old laptop, which originally came with OEM Win7, certificate of authenticity attached from when I first bought this laptop.


I did a Windows "refresh" to cure problems after recent update (couldn't fix via System restore). Problems included Windows Defender Firewall not working. Windows refresh successful, except now I can't (re-)activate Win10. I've tried entering the original Win7 Product Key, no luck. Troubleshooter doesn't complete "something interrupted our troubleshooting ..." (0x0000022). I'm logged in to the laptop as administrator on my Microsoft account, but no digital license attached, says I need to activate before I can personalize my PC.

Win10 activation using Win7 Product Key upgrading product version variant also

Dear community,

I recently purchased an HP laptop running Windows 10 Home (pre-installed).

At this point I have an activated Win10 OS running. An upgrade from Win10 Home to Pro or above comes of course with an upgrade fee.

Now, I have read that since November Microsoft supports the use of Win7/8 Product Keys in order to activate Win10.

I have purchased in the past an original copy (physical/boxed DVD) of Win7 Enterprise. Not upgrade but new install copy which of course comes with its own license.

My question is if I can use my Win7 Enterprise Product Key to activate my new laptop's Win10 Home with intentions to upgrade Win10 to Enterprise Edition free of charge considering that if I had a fresh installation of Win7 Enterprise the upgrade to Win10 would
have taken place at the same version variant level i.e. the Win10 Enterprise Edition.

Using Win10 (originally was Win7) product key for new PC installation

Hi, like many users my laptop using a genuine Win7 product key previously was upgraded to Win10. I'm currently facing windows login issue in which i tried to repair and so but it didn't help. As my laptop is quite old, i'm planning to purchase a replacement
desktop...meaning i will not be using my old laptop and hdd anymore.

Is it possible to use the original product key above on my new desktop (to be installed directly with Win10)?

That's correct. I meant to say Win7 Ultimate. That's what's written on the box. Sorry for the confusion.

So, based on your reply I can "upgrade" my Win10 Home of my new laptop purchase to Win10 Pro by using the product key of my Win7 Ultimate at no cost.
