Windows 10: ActiveX Plug In for Network Video Recorder wont launch in IE

Super odd issue is occurring here. Possible chronic.

The issue is with a Hikvision NVR and attempting to access the web GUI which uses an ActiveX plug in. In the past affected PCs have been able to access the GUI using the plug in.

Symptom: Whenever user attempt to use the WEB Gui user will get a "Live View Failed" error. This happens anytime the user attempts to use any portion of the GUI which has a video feed. (Live View, Changing Motion Settings, Changing Video Settings, ETC). This occurs both when using the web GUI of the NVR and the Camera web GUI as well. It spans across the entire system. Even spanning to off-brand Hikvision cameras, Annke (Model: I61DR) that use the Hikvision web client (WebVideoActiveX Control- HANGZHOU HIKVISION DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. 3.0.6.27- WebVideoActiveX.ocx). The plain HTML of the GUI will load fine, when the user tries to use any part of the GUI that uses the ActiveX plug in they receive an error.

It seems like the ActiveX plug in never really launches.

This NVR is not an eligible candidate for the 4.0 upgrade yet.

Tired to uninstall and reinstall:
-With Antivirus and Firewalls disabled
-In administrator mode
-Full uninstall delete registry keys and reinstall in admin mode
-Full uninstall and reinstall in windows safe mode
-Full reboots of all cameras, NVR, client computers
-Tried this on several other window 10 Machines with similar specs one machine had 8GB of ram with same OS specs.
-Network firewall was also bypassed for testing and the issue still occurs.
-Used used another brand Test Bench IP Camera that laying around (Amcrest Shield), was able to install the web client tool (ActiveX) and access all features of the GUI on the affected systems.
-Ensured Add-on was enabled
-Tried IE Tab in Chrome: no go
-Ran IE in Administrator mode

I suggest you to take a trace with WPR (it's a built in tool in Windows 10). And we can see exactly what's causing your video's glitches. Here is the steps;

• Open a command line as an Administrator;
• Type this command "wpr -start generalprofile -start CPU -start gpu -start video"; this will start trace recording.
• While recording the trace, try to work on your system (launch a video) for 1 or 2 minutes max.
• Then type this command to stop trace recording "wpr -stop C:\Temp\MyTrace.etl". Make sure the folder where you record the trace exist.
• Compress the resulting file ( VeryImportant)
• Share it through https://www.transfernow.net/en/ or any other file sharing platform.

I'll analyze your trace file and give you a feedback.

Any cheap video recorder?

I'm looking for a small, cheap video recorder. All I want is for it to accept video/audio through RCA plugs and record it to something like an SD or CF card, maybe even a hard drive. It doesn't even need a screen, but it does have to be fairly small and portable. Does anybody have any suggestions for something good?

 

Steps Recorder there... but not there


I seemed to have been saved by a link to this fix:
Please use regedit to rename hklm\software\policies\microsoft\windows\AppCompat - changeAppCompat to AppCompat_HOLD . Then try launching PSR again.
Tried it and now Steps Recorder seems to be working as it should.
But to follow up on your suggestion, I'm going to try to find and repair the corrupt files that my sfc scan found... after setting a restore point!
