Added Hard drive, Can't access device manager or open programs as administrator

    Hi!

I recently installed a 2TB barracuda hard drive to my computer that already had an NVMe samsung 970 EVO. After the installation i made the change so that all programs should get directly added to my new 2TB hard drive instead of my NVMe drive. After that tweak i can no longer start programs as administrator nor acces device manager or other windows related programs. I do not receive any error messages when i try to open these windows related programs. Though when i try to open for example cmd as administrator, i get the following message: "Can't find the file C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe. Control that you have entered the correct name and try again." But when i search for the file, it is there.

Does anyone have any clue of how i can fix this? I'm grateful for all suggestions!

  3. How to Partiton a Hard Drive in Vista

This is a way to get Vista to see another hard drive that is not associated with the OS. There is some times when your new hdd doesn't seem to want to work well with Vista. But, there is a solution in it.

Open the Computer Management By doing these steps.
    • Click on the Start Button
    • Click on Control Panel
    • Click Administrative Tools
    • Double click on Computer Management
You are now in the Navigation panel of the Computer Management.
When in Computer Management, you then have to allow the new drive to be recognized.
    • Double click on Storage
    • Double click on Disk Management
Now in the middle of your screen there is the layout of the Disk Drives that you have. The drives that are partitioned will show by the drive lettering. The others will just show up as having nothing at all in them. Below that there will be the Disk drives that are installed into the computer. You'll see that the primary one will all ways read as "Disk 0". Then you will have Disk 1 and so on. Under the Disks there will also see your CD-Rom drives.. If there is more then one, it will be labeled the same as Disk drives..

On to the Partitioning of the drive in question.
    • Right Click on the drive
    • Click to format the drive or Enable Volume. There will be a series of windows that open up. This is Vista's formatting. Just go threw the windows, and make sure everything is the way you want it to happen.
    • Once the formatting is done, will take some time depending on the drive size.
    • Right click on the drive
    • Click on Mark the Partition as Active
After you have done those steps, The drive will be up and running threw Vista.

    :Side Notes:
If you are not the Administer to the Os, then you will have to enable it..
You may also want to redo the drive lettering of it all. But, I really don't see a reason to do so. If you do, you have to redo drive paths and so forth.. A lot of work on something so small...

  4. Added Hard drive, Can't access device manager or open programs as administrator

Getting Access Denied Error When Accessing a Newly Installed Internal Hard Drive From Disk Management.

    Hi George,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

To have better clarity on the issue, answer the below-listed questions and get back to us.

    1. Do you see the Hard Drive in This PC?
    2. What is the complete error message that you get when trying to initialize the disk?
    3. Have you logged into the computer as an Administrator Account?

If you do not have any data on the drive, you may try formatting the drive and creating appropriate partition from disk management and then check if you are able to access the drive.

Try the below methods and see if this helps.

Method 1: Enable Default Administrator Account.

Step 1: Click on the Start Menu and search for
Command Prompt > Right-click on the Command Prompt >
    Run As Administrator.

Step 2: In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and hit
    Enter.

    • Net user administrator /active:yes

Step 3: Once the command is completed successfully, restart the computer once. You will see a new user account named
Administrator, so login to the Administrator account and try to initialize the disk and see if this works.

To disable the Administrator user account, login to your old user account and follow the
Step 1 and Step 2, but type the below command to disable the Administrator user account and restart the computer once.

    • Net user administrator /active:no

Method 2: Initialize the hard drive on another computer.

Remove the hard drive from your current computer and insert and initialize it on another computer. If you still see the error
Access is Denied, then you may want to contact your hard drive manufacturer for further assistance because the drive could be faulty.

    Hope it helps.

Let us know if you got the help you needed by clicking Yes or No.
