My loggin account is marked as general so I guess I didn't set up an admin account at windows10 setup. How can I do so now? I can't access UAC because the box marked Yes is grayed and not accessible. Only No is highlighted.

    :)

  2. How to correct misspelled name on Windows 10?

For those who don't see the "rename" option, it wouldn't work even if you saw it, if you're logged in as yourself (the folder would be in use). However, I did this for a user whose name was misspelled and now he gets a profile error ("can't sign you in,
you've been signed in with a temporary profile") each and every time he logs in. There must be a solution other than his living with a misspelled name! Please advise, thank you.

  3. Administrator account

In this forum we regularly deal with questions from users whose one and only admin account went bad. They are in the same position as someone who has a single house key but no spare key. The risks are obvious, hence having a spare admin account is an excellent
idea. If you now delete your old admin account then you might come to regret it.

To gain full access to your old profile folder you need to seize ownership of it then give yourself full access rights - see here:

I am not sure I understand you situation completely.
My suggestion mostly likely not applicable to you.

Do you have any admin rights ?
Are you able to do the following ?.....................

Right click at the Start button > click Command prompt (Admin) > at the flashing prompt, copy and paste this.........
    net user administrator /active:yes
    > Enter.

If you are able to do the above, you have succeeded in enabling the built-in Admin account.
Now, login to the built-in admin account > go to user account and change your own "general" account to administrator account.

I just installed windows 10 and it appears I don't have any admin rights. I am not able to do what you ask because a box appears and only allows No when asked if I will allow changes to computer. Yes is not an option because it is grayed. There is a line saying to put in admin pw but there is no where to do this. I have been scouring the internet all afternoon for answers but none have helped my cause

Thank you for responding. I downloaded the program but cannot open because of the user control block that appears with the option Yes grayed.

The volume isn't necessarily labelled Windows 10, in your case it's likely the C: volume, whose label is "OS". Anyway, if I were you I would not have followed this procedure in the first place, but rather check the users available, as there must be an account with administrator rights created already. Activating the built-in Administrator account is rarely necessary, and no standard Windows 10 installation will leave you with no privileged account.

    EDIT :
What did you download ? There was nothing to download there...

I wish I could assist you but I too am having major problems. I inadvertently made myself a Standard User rather than an administrator and now I cannot re-instate myself as an administrator. I have read all the information I can find on the internet to rectify the problem and everything keeps coming back to the same information. I cannot create a new user etc because I am not an adminitrator. And yes, I have found the same merrygoround as you have with the grayed out line for admin pw.... hey - what are we missing here

I did never fall into this pit but the "greyed yes" behaviour of the UAC prompt seems consistent with the absence of a privileged user on your system. In this case indeed, enabling the built-in administrator account seems a good solution, and the procedure indicated in the link provided by NavyLCDR does this. You will then be able to log in as "Administrator".

However, once you've put everything back in order (grant admin privileges to another account), I advise that you put back the built-in administrator account to its disabled state. No need to boot the recovery media again, you will be able to do this on your live OS with this command line : Code: net user Administrator /active:no[/quote] You have to run this from a command line prompt with admin privileges, such as what you got when you right-click the start menu => Command prompt (admin)

    Administrator Account

Someone posted a repair link; I downloaded but was unable to open because UAC prompted me for permission that I was unable to give because the "yes" button was grayed out.

It became too frustrating and a waste of my time so I went back to Windows 7 for now.

Thank you to all who were so thoughtful and prompt in responding.
