After 1511 November update, no WiFi (red X on icon).

I had my major update installed yesterday, and the only way how I managed to do that was by letting Windows delete all existing system files and drivers.

Now that I've got everything else installed back after a whole day's work, I have a problem with my Wifi driver. To be clear, it worked on my previous Win10 version last night.

The device manager says I have Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 802.11 b|g|n WiFi Adapter, with no yellow exclamation mark. However, the WiFi symbol shows the red and white X icon when I try to connect. Looking at the event log on device manager, there is a line:
    Device PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002B&SUBSYS_3040103C&REV_01\4&798c88b&0&0028 requires further installation.

Funny thing is. I'm almost sure that my WiFi network card isn't Qualcomm at all, but made by Broadcom. That's what I get when I attempt to download drivers from my manufacturer's website (HP) They have it as sp44923 installation pack there. The package consists of bcmwl6.inf file and others, which directly point at Broadcom, not Qualcomm.

Because it worked last night, I would assume you could just point the device manager to Have disk, then point to c:\Windows.old\Windows\system32 but that does not work. Neither does any of the other locations I've tried. System insists it does not either find driver or that it is already up to date. As Qualcomm. Which it isn't.

I need to get my WifFi running again. Help me out. Thank you.

    :)

After 1511 November update, no WiFi (red X on icon).

I would go to Device Manager and uninstall the drivers and reboot while online.
See if it updates the drivers with the proper wifi drivers.
    That's what I would try.

If that doesn't work I'd go to your laptop manufacturers pages and see what drivers have been updated for Windows 10.

Trying to remove them perhaps four times in the device manager, and now it works. Go figure. Windows logic.

So did Windows install the correct drivers on re-boot?

It did, eventually. No idea why it would at one point have the wrong one, and after several tries the right one.

Just right-click the device with the exclamation mark and remove the device. You can also try to update it either automatically, which is likely to fail if it doesn't work now, or choosing Have disk, and browsing to a driver you think is right.

Also, have your WiFi receiver button/swich set to on. *Wink

That's the annoying thing with Windows 10. It ignores all of your working drivers and replaces them with generic Microsoft drivers from Windows Update. Download the Wi-Fi driver from manufacturer and extract to a folder (if it is executable open it with WinRAR). Then search for device and click to open Device Manager. Right-click on the Wi-Fi adapter and select Update driver, then select the last option, again the last option until you see a Have disk button. Click on that and browse to the folder you extracted the driver. Select the first model from the list and proceed to install it, no matter if Windows warns you it cannot verify compatibility. You may need to restart your computer for changes to take effect. Then hide any driver updates to avoid Windows Update messing with it again.
