    Have you reset the thumbnail cache size? Is it jjust that Win10 update has reset the cache size to minimum?

    Yep did that yesterday, trying that PCworld link next, bar doing a full reset i'm out of ideas. But i'm trying to avoid that, as;

    1. I might be left reinstalling all my apps and settings and still have the issue afterwards.
    2. I can't really be arsed.

    What do you have in mind? I already use Lightroom to look at my RAW files, but I then export them as TIFF files to another folder. When I want to view images in that folder, how do I use something other than File Explorer? Even if I open the image in Photoshop, a File Explorer window opens for navigation purposes.

    I think i might have found and fixed my Explorer issues (not that anyone cares *Smile ) i believe it was an issue or something to do with the security/permissions in particular folders on particular drives, which was stopping win from updating the thumbnail cache correctly.

    On the harddisc where i have most of my media stored, it had some old SID's for users that don't exist anymore listed for different dirs in the security permissions, as the drive was originally a boot drive in a couple of other PC's ages ago. Since then it became a data drive. Anyway i removed the old SID's and reset the perms to what i would expect them to be at the root level of the drive. At first this made no difference at all to my issues, which i guess makes sense.

    So i thought ok lets copy all the data in one of the "problematic folder(s)" into a new folder, delete that folder to rule out any permission issues and see if the thumbnails get created and refreshed correctly.

    After moving all the data to a new folder i couldn't open or delete the original folder which had the old SID's in the permissions, even though they had already been removed! wtf. (Access denied) Takeown and Icacls resulted in access denied too, nothing would give me access to the original folder.

    So booted into safemode and only then was i able to delete the problematic folder(s).

    Then i started to rebuild the thumbnail cache for the "new" media folders and so far, fingers crossed, I've had no more explorer crashes.

    As mentioned in my previous posts i had no issues at all in 1703 with explorer, so something very funky has happened in the upgrade process imo.

    It's the same issue, its not fixed by the reg hack, icon and/or thumbnail cache is either corrupt or cannot be refreshed properly. Do what I did, create a new folder and copy everything from the original to the new, delete the old, rename the new to the same or whatever. Open all the new folders/sub folders that have pics/media and the thumbnails will be rebuilt and should display properly thereafter.

    You might want to try the TICR utility to wipe all the caches completely beforehand too, but then you have to rebuild all of your thumbnails obviously.

    I've also seen explorer struggle or bug out in 1709 when it came across video files which it didn't recognize/couldn't play with its native video player, i.e it didn't recognize the codec(s) they were created with. Before in previous builds you would just get no thumbnail for those types of files, for me it made explorer crap itself in 1709. Well until recently where I seem to have fixed it as per my previous post. Still not had anymore issues in explorer since *Smile

    Exactly, i noticed some of my pic caches/folder thumbnails were still rebuilding, aha! so theres 2 keys, i only had the 1st one turned off as mentioned in the thread.

    This is the other reg key;
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Thumbnail Cache

  15. This does 100% fix it for sure on Windows 10. You have to change both registry entries to "0". You may have a corrupt Icon and Thumbnail cache . Go here and download the file to rebuild them and then see.
