All copies read aloud; Narrator presumably disabled

Running Win 10 on laptop. Win 10 recently reinstalled. All Narrator options off via setup. Registry modified to prevent Narrator from running. Permissions set for all users to Read only. Narrator does not appear in the Task Manager. In spite of this all copies result in the text being read.

  2. READ ALOUD setting

Open Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Narrator

Toggle off Narrator and start Narrator automatically.

If you are in Microsoft Edge, right click an empty area in the web browser page

    Click Read Aloud

Click the close button when the Read Aloud menu appears

You could use narrator in Windows 10 to do that.

Open Start > Settings > Ease of Access

    Select Narrator

    Toggle on Narrator

    Hi jalea148

Could I ask you to clarify what you mean "all copies result in the text being read"?

Do you mean that PDF's are being read, or word documents, all documents being read. Additionally are the Window Systems panels being read.

This might help a member identify issue.

Anything highlighted and followed with ctrl-c will be read aloud no matter the application.

  6. Thanks. Now I know what you mean.

I know you said all settings are off but could you please go to control panel then ease of access. There are two links under main heading. Both have places to turn on Narrator. Could you just check that these are off as well. If you've already been down that path just ignore.

Could I ask, do you have the same behaviour in Safe Mode?

Have you installed any tweaking software or specialized software for the clipbaord?

    Ken,
I'll try to see if the problem continues in safe mode. This is a bizarre problem. Sometimes the problem continues for hours and then goes away. When I stopped last night it was there; this morning it wasn't and there wasn't a restart. Also, if a large text is copied none of the Narrator short cut to silence works. In addition, there is another problem, possibly related. Every few hours there is a loud noise like symbols crashing. I'm beginning to think this has nothing to do with Narrator.
    I appreciate your help; thanx.

    Ken,
Here's another clue. After choosing Safe Mode with Networking there are 2 problems: no networking and no audio. Trouble shooting audio produces the message:Both the Windows Audio and the Windows Audio End Point Builder services must be running for audio to work correctly. Atleast one of these services isn't running.
    Start required audio services Completed

Start the Windows Audio and the Windows Audio End Point Builder services

  9. Did you ever get the network running?

Once you had Audio running did the CRTL-C cause it to Narrate?

I rebooted in safe mode twice - still no network or audio. In normal mode have both. Audio problem not currently evident. In the past it returns after a few days. For the moment I have my sanity. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your help.

    Ken,
I did a search on Win 10 Wi-Fi in safe mode and found a solution. Still no audio in safe mode.

If you wouldn't mind sharing what is in your Startup tab (within Task manager). Take a screen shot of active windows (Alt +Print screen).

    Ken,
You may have inadvertently solved the audio problem. When I looked at the Task Manager I saw TtsReader was there. I'm visually impaired and use it selectively. Its upgraded version, apparently, reads all copies indiscriminately rather only when I want. When it was turned off the audio problem went away.
    Thank you.
