Windows 10: All desktop icons missing after feature update to W10, version 2004

The computer is a Surface, but I don't know which model. It belongs to a friend.


It's the obvious obvious question, how to I recover the icons?

• What is the current version and build of your Windows 10? To get these information follow these steps:
  

• Press Windows key + R.
• Once the Run box appears, type Winver.
• Press Enter.
• A small window will appear which will show these information.

Desktop Icons missing

There are several reasons why the icons in your Windows 10 may be missing. To better assist you with this matter, kindly answer the following questions:

• Have you tried turning off the Tablet mode feature? To check, follow the steps below:

• Press Windows key + I, then select System.
• Go to Tablet mode, then turn off the Make Windows more touch-friendly when using your device as a tablet.
• Check if the desktop icons were restored.

• Were there any recent changes made prior to this issue?
• What other troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

After 1803 version feature update ALL my desktop icons have disappeared 2018 October

1. What is the make and model of the computer?
   

You may try the below suggested steps to fix issue with the missing desktop icons.

Step 1: Check if you have enabled Tablet mode. If yes, Select action center, on the taskbar (next to the date and time), and then select
Tablet mode to turn it on or off.

Step 2: Ensure show desktop icons are checked.

To do so, right click on the desktop, point to
View, and then select Show desktop icons to add the check mark and check the status of the issue.
