When laptop turns on it does not automatically connect to the Always On VPN until I trigger it by disabling wireless and then enabling it.

VPN setup on a Router, PC or specific device?

The problem with using a router is then all of your traffic must go over that VPN. First you're placing a processing burden on the router as each packet will need to be encapsulated with encryption information, tunnel information, etc. for outgoing, and traffic decrypted coming in. That is a big part of the slowdown for VPN's, and the point of having one is the encryption that overhead provides.

Frankly depending on your use, I'd go road warrior style (per device) rather than a site-to-site (router-to-router). That's what I do with my PIA VPN service, that way when I need a VPN for any number of reasons, I have it, when I don't, it's off.

The Spectrum async (100/10) or sync (100/100) service?

What router do you have? It might be able to handle what you're asking if you decide to manage the VPN at the router-level...it might not.

DD-WRT is good at adding a lot more capabilities, but that doesn't mean your router hardware has the needed performance levels to handle acceptable levels of encryption for a modern VPN. And there's no sense in running weak encryption to improve performance IMHO...might as well run without at that point.

    *Toast :toast:

Edit: I should've added that going with per-device means that the device is responsible for the processing overhead of the encrypted VPN tunnel, which takes the workload off of your router. If it's a home-grade router, you might also be much happier with performance this way over trying to push it all through your router. But results will rely on a lot of variables, between hops, servers, connection issues, routes, level of encryption, ingress and egress abilities on all points, especially at the points of encryption and decryption.
