My current W10 Pro Version is 1607 (OS Build 14393.1198). Several times now (see Mysterious W10 Update Error.png) I have received this popup notification, *but* I'm still 96 versions short of the v1703 required for the update, because the updater cannot find the System Reserved Partition.

Now, some backstory ... When my old HP W7 system suddenly died, I updated to their Z240 workstation, because it shipped with W7 and, when I was done with W7, I upgraed for free to HP's version of W10 Pro. Given the version update data I have seen so far, I'm wondering if my running W10 Pro has made me appear to Microsoft as a Windows 10 Creator to whom they are sending such mysterious (to me) updates.

Please be assured that I am neither a Developer or Creator. Therefore, can TenFoums tell me what to do next? If an upgrade is available, what should I be looking for? If Microsoft has me on their Windows 10 Creator's list, how can I remove mysef from it?

    :)

1607 and 1703 are not "versions" in the traditional sense. They are not numeric build numbers. They are dates. 1607 refers to July 2016, and 1703 refers to March 2017.

The quick answer is that it is likely that you do not have enough free space on your system drive to create the new 450MB system partition, I've seen the error shown on the screenshot a few times and it was always cured by resizing the existing partition(s) to create 500MB of unallocated space at the end of the drive . (ideally this space should be available to extend the existing System partition, but as these are usually at the start of the drive and would need a lot of shuffling of partitions the end of the drive works, (or has in my experience)

    Thanks for responding.

Re: "what you believe is on each partition" -- Obviously W10 is on the C: drive; and at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EFI_sy...artition#Usage this Wiki says, "The EFI system partition (ESP) is a partition on a data storage device (usually a hard disk drive or solid-state drive) that is used by computers adhering to the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI). When a computer is booted, UEFI firmware loads files stored on the ESP to start installed operating systems and various utilities." Beyond this, I'm clueless, but, if you want, I can try to track this data down with the HP hardware folks who sold me the my Workstation with three years of tech support. For example, I'm not sure W7 is still on my machine, because it may have been overwritten by a "save current OS" step which I recall occuring at the beginning of each of the three W7 installations which were performed.

My backup drive does not show in Disk Management because it is not turned on now.

Re: "what OS's are installed now and where, what other OS's have been installed previously and where." I bought the Z240 Workstation because it came with W7 installed, and an installation disk to replace it with W10 (with their telephone support). I ended up installing W10 *twice* from a thumb drive I used to replace the defective CD-ROM. Beyond this, I'm totally guessing at what the two Recovery Partitions do, other than store the data needed to restore my system to an earlier point in time.

Please let me know what additional disk data you would like me to track down for you, and where to find the tools to do it.

I would use MiniTool Partition Wizard Free, take 50 MB from the front of your C: drive NTFS partition and add it to the 99 MB EFI System Partition.
Best Free Partition Manager for Windows | MiniTool Partition Free

Partition wizard will restart the computer when you click Apply and it will look scary as it does it thing, but just let it go and you'll get another reboot back into Windows.

Quickly Fix: Windows 10 Upgrade Couldn't Update System Reserved Partition

It is something you are eventually going to want to fix because a couple years from now your Windows 10 will be greatly outdated due to not being able to update to the next big update.

  11. NavyLCDR advised,
I have not been able to find an answer to the question, "Why are there 2 recovery partitions?", so it looks like I need to go back to my HP Z240 Workstation folks and have them walk me through HP's installation process again, before my system gets to large and complex to confidently completely restore from backup.

Thanks to all for your invaluable advice.

My laptop is about 6 months old and it has those two recovery partitions also along with the manufactures image etc on another drive.... so I would assume it is normal now.

Am I A "Windows 10 Creator" Without Knowing It?

It's quite normal these days to see a small boot partition and a larger "data" partition, forming the complete recovery solution, although I can see advantages in a live system for multiple partitions as they are safer against accidental damage during use. I see less need for it in recovery partitions which are rarely used, if ever. They are probably there to allow the manufacturer to "stock" fewer recovery versions (a general install/loader and a bespoke data set for the actual system

  14. For the new replies, my thanks. Unfortunately, my initial fumbles with HP's Z240 Workstation configuration required a reinstallation of W10 over the W10 I initially "installed over" the W7 system I originally ordered (long story). I used HP's thumb drive to install W10 both the first and second times, as there is no partition provided for it. This brings me to where I am today.

I have some more work to do "packaging my W10 files for backup", but after that I'll ping HP Z240 again to determine what I should do with the "extra" partition I'm still showing.

Any additional advice would be very appreciated.
