Yes, it is easy to convert .esd file into an ISO if you wish to.

There is a tutorial here: ESD to ISO - Create Bootable ISO from Windows 10 ESD File - Windows 10 Forums

or you can download the ISO direct from Microsoft from here: Windows 10 ISO

Wow... great to come across this. Microsoft fell flat on its face in the case of anti-virus programs. They should mandate you to uninstall your anti-virus prior to installing. How hard is that?

So, I uninstalled Avast! and was able to upgrade from 8.1 to 10. I then installed it again, and it worked fine. And now? With the Anniversary update, I get to 71% and it fails. I get a "STOP CODE: IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL." Microsoft support is atrociously USELESS in helping me. "Reformat your hard drive and install Windows 10 fresh." I don't have retail... I have OEM! Idiots.

So, what is this Avast cleaning tool? Is this something Avast provides?

The only way it worked for me was to totally uninstall Avast, reboot and then the AU went fine. Running now on Defender and Malwarebytes. Not sure if this has been fixed by Avast yet.

As far as I know Avast acknowledged the Issue and fixed it 2-3 days later ? but did not advertise it though a definition download splash screen and should have I think, as neither My Mother or Brother knew about it , so crashes for both.....

Great - thanks for this info. I've run the Avast! cleaner. I also found out a tip on how to allow software installs in Safe Mode (to help avoid any pesky service or driver clashes)... but it won't work for a Windows 10 system update.

Anyway, I'll go ahead for my 9th attempt at applying this anniversary update. I'm just about at my wit's end.

I ran the cleaner... didn't solve my problem. I get to 71% installation progress in the last phase, and then it aborts with the BSOD and a STOP CODE (IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL).

You need to update you computer Specs + OS *Smile

If you are trying windows Update , download the ISO and try a Inplace Upgrade as outlined the the Installation Tutorials Section.

Anniversary Update - a no go here

Thanks, you were right -- I was out of date.

Windows Update failed miserably with the anniversary update. So I used the Media Creation Tool and created an ISO.

I also disabled Windows Defender, just in case. I had Avast!, but uninstalled it and then ran the Avast cleanup utility just to be safe.

Still ended up failing at 71%, due to STOP CODE.

    And then greeted with this:

Anniversary Update - a no go here [IMG]

When I elected to install, I selected not to download updates during the installation process (but instead to do later)... I figured that would be safer. Is it better to let the installer download updates during the process, even though I'm using a downloaded ISO?

I had issues with .240 ( and .380) too and using the ISO was the only way to get past it for me , like you Win. Update failed time and again as did a direct download of the Update File itself.

put the error number into google and see what you find , that's not one I have before.....

    Try this:

I did use the Media Creation Tool to create an ISO... but it didn't work. Maybe I have to get an ISO of the original .240 and try that?

On the Machines that an Inplace Upgrade did not work I ended up having to Clean Install Win10 , sorry for that bad news....

You are on .240 it seems , so a .240 ISO won't help you , I am not sure if a Reset or Refresh would work , to reset something internal to Win10 , so WinUpdate will work as it should , but if an Inplace Upgrade didn't take , I suspect Not.

I have had no issues again once past .240 or .380 but still have two machines on 1511 .589 but no AU yet , but I haven't forced those as they are on older hardware and AU may not be ready for them?

Not necessarily. I have a Samsung R519 circa 2009 vintage that's running 1511. That got offered the AU when I last checked for updates.

I discovered that you had to completely UNINSTALL Avast! Even disabled, it is still "running." With Defender, I didn't uninstall it, but just disabled it.

I managed to update my Windows 8.1 Pro x64 SSD (Winclone copy for testdriving) to Windows 10 AU-1607. It auto activated with the digital license!

I had to UNINSTALL my ESET Smart Security v9 av software first, after the update was installed, I re-installed ESET. Piece of cake!

    Cheers
