  2. I agree, I used this years ago -KIS and I thought it was a great AV. I finally got the Download from Shawn's last post and it was a direct DL. I may try it if we get a build tomorrow.

I think I am sticking with WD for now. I hate those "Free" 365 days AVs a la Avast. Also if it's pestering with countless popups nags I think I will pass. I could make a Macrium Reflect backup and try it though (maybe at work today).

PS. Does anyone has a link to an offline installer? I hate those stubs with passion.

I already get Kaspersky Total Security 'free' from my UK bank. Only the direct download link above works for me in the UK.

I prefer a 'belts and braces' approach so I also use MS defender periodic scanning, Malwarebytes (not real time) and AdwCleaner.

I'm surprised nobody has commented on the potential vulnerability of Kaspersky being a Russian company. I expect it depends whether you have concerns whether the backdoors into your PC are via the NSA or FSB.

Scan has finished (took longer than most other scanners) but it found d:\swarf\Downloads\Unconfirmed 792031.crdownload/Windows_Expert_Tool.exe//Tools\Dialupass..exe which I don't remember downloading. It looks like a partial browser download.

    Announcing Kaspersky Free Anti-Virus

Sorry to put the boot in on what appears to some to be Gods gift of a freebie.

About a year or so ago ( posted on this forum ) a friend of mine was having computer problems with Vista installed.
For years he had been using the full paid version of Kaspersky with all its bells and whistles.

I kid you not there were literally hundreds of infections that needed to be removed, to gain back control.

This reinforced my opinion that there is no such thing as a foolproof AV security package....anyone believing it is so is living in cloud cuckoo land.

  9. There is no such thing as fool proof, there is only a certain degree of mitigation.

It sounds like that user required more than just an AV to prevent issues on their machine. Perhaps some training in what not to open?

  11. It's ok, he works in IT and knows what he's doing!

    Anyway, back to the topic.
I had Kapersky for a while, but found it was too clunky on my system and was quite happy to use as much resource as available. Swapped out to ESET and i've had to double check a few times to see if it was even running!

The only reason I won't install it, is, I like Defender, and have been using it since it came out as Microsoft Security Essentials, during Windows 7 days and have never been infected(of course I check using malware scanners too, and use an anti-exploit(MBAE).

I just don't want to use a 3rd party solution, because, you then need to remember to turn it off, when upgrading Win10(as opposed to updating), or if you need to use a system repair tool, you also usually need to remember to turn it off before repairs.

But the main reason is I like Defender. Plain and simple.*Smile

The idea of putting all eggs in the Microsoft basket is definately asking for trouble. (That rather large exploit with defender not a month ago?).

But hey, if you have at least some sense all an AV will do is provide a fail safe when you're browsing.

You being an expert?...your above statements preclude that.....the Defender Autumn/Fall Creator update will render paid for AV suites unnecessary.

  15. Me being a realist, putting that much trust into MS doesn't make sense. They're not infallible, their marketing strategy and internal decisions from prior updates or upgrades prove that..
