Windows 10: Announcing .NET Core 3 Preview 3

Today, we are announcing .NET Core 3.0 Preview 3. We would like to update you on the .NET Core 3.0 schedule and introduce you to improvements in .NET Core SDK installers, Docker containers, Range, and Index. We also have updates on the Windows Desktop and Entity Framework projects.

.NET Core 3.0 will be supported in Visual Studio 2019, Visual Studio for Mac and Visual Studio Code. A new C# extension update (install VSIX) has been produced with the latest C# compiler (aligned with .NET Core Preview 3 and Visual Studio 2019 Preview 4).

We recently published an update on Floating-Point Parsing and Formatting improvements in .NET Core 3.0. Please check out that post in you use floating APIs and associated mathematical operations.

Schedule

We have seen people asking questions about when .NET Core 3.0 will be released. They also want to know if .NET Core 3.0 will be included in Visual Studio 2019. Visual Studio 2019 RC was recently released, which is part of the motivation for the questions.

We plan to ship .NET Core 3.0 in the second half of 2019. We will announce the ship date at the Build 2019 conference.

Visual Studio 2019 will be released on April 2nd. .NET Core 2.1 and 2.2 will be included in that release, just like they have been in the Visual Studio 2019 preview builds. At the point of the final .NET Core 3.0 release, we’ll announce support for a specific Visual Studio 2019 update, and .NET Core 3.0 will be included in Visual Studio 2019 from that point on.

We’re tracking to shipping .NET Core 3.0 preview releases every month. By coincidence,the previews now align with the months. We’re releasing Preview 3 today and we’re in the third month. We hope to continue that pattern until the final release.

.NET Core SDK installers will now Upgrade in Place

For Windows, the .NET Core SDK MSI installers will start upgrading patch versions in place. This will reduce the number of SDKs that are installed on both developer and production machines.

The upgrade policy will specifically target .NET Core SDK feature bands. Feature bands are defined in hundreds groups in the patch section of the version number. For example, 3.0.101 and 3.0.201 are versions in two different feature bands while 3.0.101 and 3.0.199 are in the same feature band.

This means when .NET Core SDK 3.0.101 becomes available and is installed, .NET Core SDK 3.0.100 will be removed from the machine if it exists. When .NET Core SDK 3.0.200 becomes available and is installed on the same machine, .NET Core SDK 3.0.101 will not be removed. In that situation, .NET Core SDK 3.0.200 will still be used by default, but .NET Core SDK 3.0.101 (or higher .1xx versions) will still be usable if it is configured for use via global.json.

This approach aligns with the behavior of global.json, which allows roll forward across patch versions, but not feature bands of the SDK. Thus, upgrading via the SDK installer will not result in errors due to a missing SDK. Feature bands also align with side by side Visual Studio installations for those users that install SDKs for Visual Studio use.

We would like feedback on the approach we’ve taken for upgrading the .NET Core SDK in place. We considered a few different policies and chose this one because it is the most conservative. We’d also like to hear if it is important to build similar experience on macOS. For Linux, we use package managers, which have an existing upgrade-in-place behavior.

Announcing .NET Core 3 Preview 2

.NET Core 3.0 Preview 2 is now available and it includes a bunch of new updates to ASP.NET Core.

Here's the list of what's new in this preview:

Razor Components

SignalR client-to-server streaming

Pipes on HttpContext

Generic host in templates

Endpoint routing updates

Get started

To get started with ASP.NET Core in .NET Core 3.0 Preview 2 install the .NET Core 3.0 Preview 2 SDK

If you're on Windows using Visual Studio, you'll also want to install the latest preview of Visual Studio 2019.

Upgrade an existing project

To upgrade an existing an ASP.NET Core app to .NET Core 3.0 Preview 2, follow the migrations steps in the ASP.NET Core docs.

Add package for Json.NET

As part of the work to tidy up the ASP.NET Core shared framework, Json.NET is being removed from the shared framework and now needs to be added as a package.

To add back Json.NET support to an ASP.NET Core 3.0 project:

Add a package reference to Microsoft.AspNetCore.Mvc.NewtonsoftJson

Update your ConfigureServices method to include a call to AddNewtonsoftJson().

Runtime compilation removed

As a consequence of cleaning up the ASP.NET Core shared framework to not depend on Roslyn, support for runtime compilation of pages and views has also been removed in this preview release. Instead compilation of pages and views is performed at build time. In a future preview update we will provide a NuGet packages for optionally enabling runtime compilation support in an app.

Announcing .NET Core 2.2 Preview 3

Today, we are announcing .NET Core 2.2 Preview 3. We have made more improvements to the overall release that we would love to get your feedback on, either in the comments or at dotnet/core #2004.

ASP.NET Core 2.2 Preview 3 and Entity Framework 2.2 Preview 3 were also released today.

.NET Core 3 Preview 1 and Open Source Windows Desktop Frameworks

Today, we are announcing .NET Core 3 Preview 1. It is the first public release of .NET Core 3. We have some exciting new features to share and would love your feedback. You can develop .NET Core 3 applications with Visual Studio 2019 Preview 1, Visual Studio for Mac and Visual Studio Code.

Visual Studio 2019 will be the release to support building .NET Core 3 applications and the preview was also released today so we also encourage you to check that out.

.NET Core 3 is a major update which adds support for building Windows desktop applications using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Forms, and Entity Framework 6 (EF6). ASP.NET Core 3 enables client-side development with Razor Components. EF Core 3 will have support for Azure Cosmos DB. It will also include support for C# 8 and .NET Standard 2.1 and much more!

.NET Framework 4.8

Before diving into .NET Core 3 let’s take a quick look at .NET Framework. Next year we will ship .NET Framework 4.8. With monitors supporting 4K and 8K resolutions we are adding better support for high DPI to WPF and Windows Forms. Many .NET applications use browser and media controls, which are based on older versions of Internet Explorer and Windows Media player. We are adding new controls that use the latest browser and media players in Windows 10 and support the latest standards. And WPF and Windows Forms applications will have access to Windows UI XAML Library (WinUI) via XAML Islands for modern look and touch support. Visual Studio 2019 is based on .NET Framework and uses many of these features. For more information on .NET Framework 4.8 see our post: Update on .NET Core 3.0 and .NET Framework 4.8.

Windows Desktop Comes to .NET Core

The first two versions of .NET Core focused primarily on supporting web applications, web APIs, IoT and console applications. .NET Core 3 adds support for building Windows desktop applications using WPF and Windows Forms frameworks and modern controls and Fluent styling from the Windows UI XAML Library (WinUI) via XAML Islands.

Many desktop applications today use Entity Framework for data access and so we are supporting Entity Framework 6 on .NET Core 3 as well. These frameworks enable developers building Windows desktop applications to take advantage of the new features in .NET Core such as side by side deployment, self-contained applications (shipping .NET Core inside the application), the latest improvements in CoreFX, and more.

WPF, Windows Forms, and WinUI Open Sourced

On November 12, 2014 we announced the open sourcing of .NET Core. It has been a tremendous success. The .NET platform has received over 60,000 community accepted pull requests from more than 3700 companies outside of Microsoft.

Today, we are excited to announce that are open sourcing WPF, Windows Forms, and WinUI, so the three major Windows UX technologies will be open sourced. For the first time ever, the community will be able to see the development of WPF, Windows Forms, and WinUI happen in the open and we will take contributions for these frameworks on .NET Core. The first wave of code will be available in GitHub today and more will appear over the next few months.

WPF and Windows Forms projects are under the stewardship of the .NET Foundation which also announced changes today so that the community will directly guide foundation operations. It is also expanding the current sponsors – Red Hat, JetBrains, Google, Unity, Microsoft and Samsung, by also welcoming Pivotal, Progress Telerik and Insight. This new structure will help the .NET Foundation scale to meet the needs of the growing .NET open source ecosystem.
