    and you generate it by copying gatherosstate.exe from the sources folder of a Windows 10 ISO file or Windows 10 installation USB flash drive or DVD to your desktop. Run it from the desktop (I think it might have to be run as administrator, but not sure). genuineticket.xml will then appear on your desktop.

    So gatherosstate.exe is generic, and you run it on the computer that you've just clean installed 10 on offline, then put the resulting file in the proper place in the Windows folder. Then when you go on line MS finds it?

    Not quite. gatherosstate.exe is generic. You run it on the Windows 7/8/8.1 before you upgrade. That saves the license information for the WIndows 7/8/8.1 in the genuineticket.xml file. After installing Windows 10, then you copy the genuineticket.xml from Windows 7/8/8.1 which contains the old license into the proper folder in the Windows 10 and Windows 10 will use that to activate itself as an upgrade from the Windows 7/8/8.1 the genuineticket.xml file was from.

    Ah, that makes sense, thanks for the clarification! So this doesn't guarantee activation, it just helps Windows get it right if you are entitled to digital entitlement?

    It's as close to guaranteed activation as you can get. An in-place upgrade uses the exact same method to activate from the previous Windows 7/8/8.1.

    Another Activation Problem

    I gave it a go and nothing. Reinstalled 7, activated it, created the Genuine Ticket. Upgraded to 10 offline, copied Genuine Ticket into the appropriate folder. Went online, not activated. Entered the good Win 7 number, not successful. *Sad
