I tried the generic key and no activation.

As for where I got the 7 key, I'd rather not say, but it did activate so I'm not sure why it wouldn't also activate 10.

We cannot assist if you are using a dodgy or even illegal key.

That's your answer then. Purchase a legitimate license and you will be good to go.

Fair enough, thanks for all of the help. *Smile I admit I stretched things a bit, but the machine originally came with a working copy of 7 and I'd be in the same spot if I'd bought it with the hard drive with 7 working and it self destructed the next day.

  5. That windows 7 key is likely blacklisted on the Windows 10 activation server. Multiple use, or some other violation. I'm surprised Windows 7 activated with it? Don't be surprised if activation fails in Windows 7, at some point.

Thanks, I guess I'll quit with that approach. *Sad

Post #10 shows an OEM:SLP activation - that would be pretty much a self-contained license contained on the install media Windows 7 was installed with. With no accompanying COA that is definitely signs of a less than legitimate purchase of Windows 7.

He posted that he entered a key manually though? You can't activate OEM-SLP with a manual key entry?

"When I installed 7 (Pro, and yes it matched with 10) I used my 7 All In One Flash drive and entered the product key after the fact, and it said it was activated."

  9. If you obtain recovery media from the manufacturer, and reinstall Windows 7 with that. It will restore the original factory OEM-SLP activation. It should then be no problem upgrading and activating Windows 10.

Another option is to contact them, tell them you had to replace the hard drive, and complain about the missing COA sticker. That key is the key you would use to reinstall from stock install media. It should have that sticker on it.

  10. Personally, I see why you did what you did. You had a legal Windows 7, but lost it. Then tried to get it back. Just not by the best method. At least you were honest enough to admit your mistake. I've seen many threads just go silent when a certain question is asked. I think I'd plead my case with HP. And tell them all you want to do is get the free upgrade to 10.

Is pleading my case with HP something I'd do on the phone?

  12. If they have a toll free number. I wouldn't want to be paying long distance fee's for listening to elevator music. Go to their web site and look for a "contact us" option. They likely have a live chat option that wouldn't cost you anything other than some time. It all depends on what they ask and how you answer. They will likely ask you where you bought it, etc. And what is your issue.

I'm still non-plussed on the failure to upgrade OEM... it should upgrade (the only Win 7 blacklisted key was the initial Lenovo Win 7 Ultimate key)

The fact that there is no COA sticker on that PC is also perplexing.

  14. There are some pieces missing from the puzzle? The screen shoot shows OEM-SLP activation, but he also mentioned having to manually enter a key? If OEM-SLP is being fudged, and the activation server detected it, that may be why it failed to activate. And like you said, that rearm count doesn't look right either. I think its getting borderline as far as forum rules go too. At some point a mod will likely lock of delete the thread.

I actually have 4 of these, they came from a corporate setting. They all look just the same, a sticker on them says "downgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 7". They apparently were ordered that way from HP, I found mention of this on the HP forum. But you're right, even so, why wouldn't HP have put a sticker on them? I've had plenty of other corporate retirees and all have come with COA's which worked perfectly fine to activate despite that I assume they originally had some sort of volume license.
