    Antimalware Service Executable taking up high CPU for several hours!


    A service called Antimalware Executable takes up about 30 % of my CPU. It doesn't normally do this, and I tried following the tutorials on how to disable in the task schedule and registry (I use Win10 Home and thus cannot use Group Policy).

    I also tried including an exeption in its scan, so it does not scan itself.

    But it still takes up a lot of CPU.

    How do I fix the high cpu usage?

    Antimalware Service Executable problem

    I was having the same issue like for weeks on my HP Probook Ci5 12GB, the Antimalware Service Executable process was eating up massive CPU, DISK and RAM. After all the hard time I got searching the solution I finally landed on

    Antimalware Service Executable taking up high CPU for several hours!

    Yes, I know. I already read these tutorials (and countless others). They all say the same, but it does not work. Windows Defender still use up 30 % of my CPU no matter whatever I do!

    Please somebody help me! What's the reason none of these tutorials work for me?!?

    Maybe if you post your system specs in the required spot, we will have something to go by. I have Defender turned on and It is not using any CPU resources at the moment.

    No, it usually did not for me either, until today.

    Posting system specs is a little off-topic, because my problem is that even though I do this step:

    - The Antimalware Service Executable still runs high. I have a pretty good CPU and this has never been a problem until today.

    My computer is neither new or old. It was installed 1½ years ago. I never had any problems until today.

    I did this step:

    That "note" is my problem... it still scans, and it is still scanning while I am writing this.

    I already set the Exclusions to the Windows Defender path. Did not work either.

    Antimalware Service Executable taking up high CPU for several hours!

    Can you check which folders is defender scanning? If there are any folders with large .zip or ISO files?

    You can check this in Resource monitor (click start and type resource - it wil show on top). In Image, check msMpEng and in lower part (under Disk tab) you can see which files are currently scanned..

    Do you have an alternative Antivirus solution? If you have it enabled before, that could be the culprit of high CPU usage.
