    Antivirus needed??

True but the browser hijacker came from a file sharing site(Dev-Host) which I had downloaded all kinds of files from before with no problems. I thought it was safe.

I never like avast.. when I used it I found that it would block programs that I coded and tried to test. Not useful for me one bit. AVG is ok I guess but in the end I would use a pay AV, Kaspersk. I've used it in the past and it's great, IMO.

They're know for including things like that, Develophers for my old tablet stored their work there and there never was an issue but Cnet if full of malware.

OT: Anyone that has possibly purchased BitDefender at a discount, wasn't satisfied with it and stopped using it like me. I was greeted with a $70 PayPal charge this morning. I "assume" they have a auto-renewal that I missed! *cry I've been notified before prior to a upcoming charge but I guess AvanGate doesn't do that. I have filed a complaint with PayPal, we'll see how that goes.

  5. This is the same song and dance I hear every time I tell this story. If the free AV app allowed an infection I don't know how you can say, nothing is perfect and continue to use it. In W7 Webroot blocked the download of a file but in W10, MS Defender allowed it to be downloaded. The choice is clear to me. It's clear to you... not the millions of people who have never had an issue with MSE hence there isn't a "best" one, i have seen many infections on PC's regardless of the AV installed (Kaspersky, McAfee, AVG etc...).

These infections are from both Home Users and Corporate Users that i support at work.

I've not had an issue with MSE YET, you haven't had an issue with Webroot YET

I'm in no way saying people should use MSE, that's an individual choice.
There is really no catch all fix.

Seriously,. there is not one single AV that's going to keep you from getting either a virus or malware if you take chances in what you download or the web sites you visit. Each person takes on that risk and understanding that is the key.

No developer of an AV product can honestly claim that their product is compatible with Windows 10. This is impossible while Windows 10 is till in a state of active development. Members of this forum may say that a particular AV product works well with Windows 10 but I expect this "testing" is far below the standards of an AV software developer. I still maintain that Windows Defender is the safer option - at this time.

That is my view and it isn't going to change. The opinions of others will differ. At my age I tend to take a more conservative view, particularly when I am making recommendations to others, many who will do not understand the implications.

If there are other choices, why would not try something else if a product fails for you? Do you think that they are all the same or nothing can be better? If you think that nothing is 100% protection then it doesn't matter what you use.

If you think that nothing is 100% protection then it doesn't matter what you use. Do you think that an AV is 100% going to protect you from a virus/malware?? The AV companies are always playing catch up to the guys/gals that write viruses and there is no way that they can predict what they will do next. It's good to have an AV but no matter how good it is it can't protect it from yourself.

A 100% fuel proof AV just doesn't exit and never will.

Nope, I don't think an AV is going to protect 100% but there are better options to choose from. Wish I could find that article where even a MS spokesperson made that statement.

This is going to be my last input into this but you say "There are better options to choose from" ... I think it's fair to say that is the same as saying this AV is better than that AV however you can't truly say that.

Where one AV will prevail another will fail and visa versa...
Ultimately as i said earlier it's an individual choice based on your reasons for choosing that particular AV.

I believe one of the main points that lead to this debate was a comment along the line that MSE/Defender is the best while in the preview phase as 3rd party companies can't necessarily know what M$ are doing to the OS in each update and in my opinion it's a fair comment however it's certainly not a show stopper for people wanting to play with other AV's if they so choose to.

For me it depends on whether Windows 10 is installed in a virtual machine or physically on your hard drive. I run it in a virtual machine (WMWare Workstation) and there is no access to my hard drives except to one shared folder. With this setup I feel quite comfortable with Windows Defender and the built in firewall plus Malwarebytes. But if I had it physically installed on my pc I would never trust Windows Defender.

I'm not running Win 10 on a VM but rather an extra SSD drive I had. When I installed Malwarebytes, it stopped the Windows Defender Services.

So did you notice Defender was not running after Malwarebytes was installed or is this a unique feature of VM that it won't stop the services of Defender?

  14. Not sure about everyone else; but Ive downloaded and reinstalled avg antivirus 2015 in 10 and it seems to be working just fine so far. I have not gotten any errors or anything of that sort; but i will continue to watch and see if anything comes up.

When I get the RTM of WIn10 I plan on getting Kaspersky, yes 31$ but I really like it and it worked fine for me in the past.
