    gcwizard,

About "Why make bootable drives if just getting updates? Is this needed as you are installing updates on a running/online OS?" - Cumulative updates do not update you from one Version to the next.
    • You install the latest Cumulative update to your current Version [1703] to install the latest Build within that version.
    • You create an installation USB to install the next version [ver 1709, expected 17th October 2017].

If you have skipped a few updates you have no option but to download the full cumulative update. If you follow the link to the Microsoft update catalog given in the KB article...
    Cumulative Update KB4038788 Windows 10 v1703 Build 15063.608

...it will show you just those updates for this particular KB (the link is a search for the relevant KB number). You will see there are Delta updates available, about half the size of the cumulative update. These should be all the changes since the last cumulative update. These can only be used if you have kept up to date with all previous updates.

The MCT has nothing to do with downloading from the Update Catalog.

I just bit the bullet last night and downloaded the latest CU thru WU. I had all previous updates so it was not a huge download. Just would like to in the future only download these CU's once for my two computers. I have both set to share updates but so far this has not worked to only get one downloaded CU for my two win 10 64 bit PC's. One is pro and one is home. Both are legit version 1703 15063.608 currently. I guess that I can just set both PC's to metered connection and then when new CU's are available just download to a flash drive as I am told a bootable drive is only needed when the next OS comes out. I will then use HeiDoc to download the new OS to get a WIM ISO version as MS uses ESD's'. I use Rufus to make my bootable usb drives. Thanks for the help. Had hoped I could use a command prompt to copy the latest CU and transfer it to the other PC. I know there are dism package info commands.

So far I have not seen anyone report that this has worked for them...

As you are now fully up to date, the Delta update should be sufficient.

There is a way to get an ISO direct from Microsoft. Last time I used this method it was a WIM ISO. Go to Microsoft's Download Windows 10 page using Edge. Now use the F12 Developers Tools and on the Emulation tab set the 'User Agent String' to 'Apple Safari (iPad)'. The page then changes to one offering direct ISO downloads.

Thanks Bree! I prefer Wims as they are mountable repair options. Goes way back to a WIN 8 OEM I had that had seemingly endless WU issues and component store corruption that DISM / restore health could not fix. Way to many re-installs of the OS to fix it. MS techs couls not repair it either twice. After upgrading thru 8.1 update(S) and finally to Win 10 I used to download ISO's using MCT from MS Win 10 DL page but they were always ESD's. I understand why MS uses ESD to save bandwidth as millions use their downloads to update their OS. I just do not like a compressed image nor is it an option to mount for repair. I then used ESD to ISO script to convert. Image burn will also create ISO's. A poster here some months ago used HeiDoc and it created WIM's thru technet's site/MS servers. Been using it since to create ISO's for install and repair if needed. I have been told when Creators update installed it also replaces the RE image as well. I hope this is true but unsure how to confirm this. Thanks for all your help! Ten Forums and 8 Forums are the best!

Yes - just set settings in advanced updates and settings to allow pcs to download updates from other pcs on lan.

Update one pc first, and other will pick up updates from first pc.

It has been set that way on both PC's for 3 months thus far and no transfers. Both units are 1703 64 bit. One is home, one is pro. I do keep the second PC set as a metered connection to keep from downloading the same large CU's twice as I have a 12gb/month data cap. It also is not turned on during daytime but leave it on 24/7 each weekend to do this task. The other PC is not set as metered so it can get the updates. If MS/windows can do this automatically why cannot I do this manually. I can see the packages using dism /online /get-packageinfo command prompts. Would these packages be in temp files that windows clean-up utility shows? I clean regularly as my laptop has a 250gb ssd. I wish Ms would state updates sizes as they did in pre Win 10 so one can tell size without going to their download page to check this. I have a free-zone late at night and have been getting up in the middle of the night to download these updates. PIA. Other than that I do like 1703. Thanks!
