    Why don't you save the hassles > click the 3 dots > select Open with Internet Explorer > you can set Google.com as your home page in IE11.
    Or better still, switch to IE11 ?

    Yes I know just got used to using Edge is all; will shift to IE 11 anyways.

    You can use goggle as your home page and search engine in IE11.

    you can "undock " and leave it open in another window. and drop it down in taskbar.

    Maybe I've mis-understood what the problem was

    Here in IE11 it works "As normal" -- same in Edge
