Windows 10: Apps reopen themselves after first login after patch Tuesday update

Something odd just happened. After installing the latest set of patches today and rebooting. After I logged back in all of the previous programs I had open before the log off started back up automatically. Does anyone have any explanation for this behavior? I don't want this to happen.

My problems for the most part fixed themselves after a patch to the update. I only have two apps that will never download and/or update.

Surprised by the first Tuesday of the month Cumulative Update...and another coming next Tuesday 8-8-17 the traditional Patch Tuesday. Did all go well?

This would be the new behavior in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

If you like, the information at the top of the tutorial below can provide workarounds including the Shut down context menu to help with this.

Hi Brink, this is odd. I have been on the fall creators update since its release and have not noticed this behavior until after does patch and reboot. I will check out the workarounds. Thanks.

 

If it helps for testing, Registry Editor (regedit) is one app that will auto restart.

 

Oh okay, I thought all apps restarted. But either way, this feature seems to buggy for me. Happens after some reboots for me, after others it doesn't. I think i'll let the issue lie for now. I'll come back here if it becomes a problem. Thanks Brink.

Even though as they claim the majority of people like this behavior, I don't get why they didn't integrate a registry switch or group policy switch so we can turn this off if we don't like it?

 

I agree. There may be a case for restarting apps after an update install needs a restart - but on every restart? Surely not. I want a clean slate when I do a restart.

Apart from Brink's context menu tutorial, there are other ways to do a clean restart.

Usually, one would close all apps for a proper shut down or restart anyways though.

 

I usually do that but sometimes I have apps that sit in the system tray which I forget to close.

 

UPDATE: Starting with Windows 10 build 17040:

Based on your feedback, the feature to restore applications that have registered for application restart after you reboot or shutdown (through power options available on the Start Menu and various other locations) has been set to only occur for users that have enabled “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting my device after an update or restart” in the Privacy section under Sign-in Options Settings.
