Are motherboard chipset drivers still needed?

I'm doing a clean install (actually a clean re-install) of Win10-Pro on an Asus P9X79-DLX / i7-3930K computer. If the Device Manager shows all the devices working properly is there any need or benefit in installing any motherboard chipset drivers that might be on the Asus support page for this mobo?

    :)

Missing 2nd SATA disk after Windows 10 upgrade.

    Install your motherboard's chipset drivers.

Windows 8 chipset drivers will work if there are no Windows 10 drivers.

What are these two programs good for, Catalyst Control Center, HydraVision

Also - CCC installs with your AMD graphics drivers, and is also used to manage other AMD drivers such as

motherboard chipset drivers, if your motherboard uses an AMD chipset.

You can't uninstall CCC without uninstalling the drivers.

You can uninstall Hydra Vision if you don't use it.

Probably not but if you check the ASUS website and there are new Win 10 compatible drivers (chipset or otherwise) then I would prefer those over any that Win 10 installs.

When I previously attempted to install the 2 SATA drivers ASUS offers (Marvell and Asmedia) Windows 10 reported that the ones already installed were newer. There are no Intel SATA drivers offered. There is a Nov. 2015 chipset driver. But I assumed that if all components have been recognized and installed then it might not really do anything.

It depends. For my X99 chipset, Intel AHCI driver is faster than standard MSAHCI.

There can be some features of your motherboard that can be enabled with the manufacturer's chipset driver that may not be enabled with a generic Windows driver.
If Windows has installed the manufacturer's driver already then this may not be necessary.

You can check to see which driver you have by going to Device Manager > System Devices > select any of the devices that say Chipset > Right Click on it > Properties > Driver, and see if it is a Microsoft or an Intel driver (or AMD if you were checking an AMD board).

Did Gigabyte offer the Intel AHCI driver on the driver page for your mobo? I'm doing this reinstall because my 1st attempt resulted in serious hard disk performance problems and errors. ASUS does not offer any Intel drivers for Windows 10. I unpacked and inspected the 'now year old' chipset driver and all it seems to contain is an Intel ME driver and that's it.

Did you manually select/install the Intel AHCI driver?

I'm trying to avoid making the same mistakes I may have made when I installed Win10-Pro(64) the first time. That ended with some very strange hard disk behaviour with Photoshop CS6 and Bridge-CS6 running slow, at times unresponsive, and having file reading errors. The same apps under Win7 (same system) run flawlessly.

I did previously install the ASUS provided chipset drive and wonder if it perhaps was the cause of the problem?

I just downloaded and ran the Intel Driver Update Utility v2.4. It had me download the Intel Chipset Device Software v10.1.1.14. But when I tried to run it (SetupChipset.exe) it failed with the message "Unknown error". Running it in Safe Mode resulted in the same failure to install.

Weird ... I'm starting to think I should just let Windows 10 do what it wants - "if it ain't broke"

I'm proceeding with the reinstall and from what I've seen so far the Adobe apps are behaving properly. I have not installed any of the Asus drivers which appear to be old and are more recent ones have been installed by Win10. I don't know what caused all the grief with the first install but this one is behaving a LOT better.

I had another look at the P9X79-DLX Win10 chipset drivers that ASUS is offering on it's support page and now noticed that the 3 chipset driver downloads offered (dated 2014, 2015 and 2015) are not quite all the same thing. So I downloaded all 3 and installed them beginning with the oldest. Only the second one required a restart and the third one (most recent) warned that the installed driver was newer so I skipped it.

In the past I've usually only seen one motherboard chipset package to install. I guess truing to install all three (in order of their age) won't do any harm.
