Windows 10: Artifacts on screen. Screen goes black

@BugMeister Wish i would have seen this earlier, i already sent the gpu out for rma. Going to be beating myself up for not looking into that cooler flag first. Guess I'll make sure its wired properly, clean it and put some fresh paste on.

 

Reason i want to put make sure its connected right/ put new paste on, when it came the cooler screw knobs were kinda loose and idle temps were a little high, 40-50c. I'm not sure of the temps since i tightened it up a bit. I've seen some threads about that 690lc driver flag. Supposedly installing some fan controller software/ drivers fixes it. Really wish i had an old gpu laying around. Guess it's time to check Craig's list for a cheap card to play around with.

 

- at least you'll be able to discount any hardware fault with the GFX card itself, which is a (minor) plus..
- the 580 should be able to handle fairly high temperatures, it's a pretty robust piece of kit..
- AMD cards will generally run perfectly OK at high temps - mine run fine even up around 80/90 degrees

- I have Sapphire Trixx installed to enable crossfire settings and some reasonable OC timings

- let us know how things proceed, I'm keen to see how well the new AMD stuff performs.. *Biggrin

Specs for the asus rog rx580 strix show the fan doesnt even kick on until temps rise above 55c. This load test from guru3d shows 66c.




Noticed you have two 480's, are they two 8g? They must run pretty nicely. From what i understand the 580 is just a slightly upgraded 480.

If i managed to get another 580 after this eth mining craze slows down, or after Vega is released, would i be able to run the strix in crossfire with a reference card or different manufacturer? Or would they have to both be strix 580's? Just wondering, I've seen conflicting info when i search it up. I'd most likely just get another strix of course. Although, I'm not sure two strix 580's would fit next to each other.

Im quite ready to test the card out, along with the 1600x. I will definitely keep you updated. Im anxiously awaiting my rx580's return.
I found a place near me where i can get a geforce 210 for around 20 bucks. Will make a good temp gpu for now. It would be compatible with my ryzen 1600x on a x370 board right? Maybe I'll get two and run them in sli just for fun *092

 

Same is happening to my Rx 460. Fans don't kick in until about 55c but back of the card feels hotter than that which makes me wander about temp sensor accuracy.

 

What program do you use to measure temps? I dont know of any problems with amd gpu's but I've heard some things about x series ryzen's incorrectly reporting temps. Offset anywhere from 6-20c

 

It's probably dead. Is it still under warranty?

 

Yeah, i have a 3 year warranty. I sent it out for RMA 2 days ago. If all goes well I'll have one that works in a week or two. Im just hoping the bad card was the reason for my black screen when installing amd display drivers.

 

Well, there's a place near me that has TONS of pc hardware, so i picked up one of these for $5.



Not a bad deal i think.

Anyway, i installed it and I'm still getting artefacts on screen..



Is this gpu bad as well or some other issue?
Tried some drivers unsuccessfully but I'm going to try some others when i get home.
Just updated bios to 2.40 for ryzen microcode update.

 

Have you checked cable, are you using any adapters ?

 

No adapters. With the rx580 i was using hdmi, had same problem with different hdmi cables and monitors.
With this ati sapphire x1650 im using a dvi-d cable. It was brand new in package, traded a couple old1gb sticks of laptop ram for it.

Would i be correct to assume it's not a driver issue because artifacts are displaying in bios?

Im really perplexed by this. Did i just send back a perfectly good strix rx580? Or is this card bad too? *Confused

 

- check the mobo connector on the gfx card for dust and dirt - make sure it's properly seated

Well, good news. Pulled out my old Dell and put that x1650 in it. Had artifacts on screen.




Traded the x1650 for a different card and its working fine.



Guess the rx580 was just bad.
Hopefully i don't have to wait more than a week for the new one to get here.

 

Following the thread, I was starting to suspect the monitor. But it looks like you had lightning strike twice on the GPU, with two bad cards to deal with. My sympathies, and good troubleshooting work!
