Windows 10: Asmedia USB 3.0 drivers installation failure.

Discus and support Asmedia USB 3.0 drivers installation failure. in Windows 10 Drivers and Hardware to solve the problem; I have only 2x USB 3.0 ports, so it is probably used only for those. Discussion in 'Windows 10 Drivers and Hardware' started by Kol12, May 18, 2017.

I have those same drivers on my non-ASUS system which are used for a Dock for the laptop.

If you are showing the unknown device which appears to be ASMedia related, the system is seeing some device. You might try uninstalling it to see if it will be picked up again. Uninstalling the other drivers is also a possibility.

How many USB ports do you have on the back of the system and how many are Blue?

I'm still confused as to why Asus have those Asmedia drivers on the Z97-A download page. I've emailed Asus to try and get clarification but so far no response.

I understand USB is now built into Win 8 and Win 10 which means specific USB drivers aren't needed? Perhaps the Asmedia drivers are for additional USB features like the USB 3.1 card mentioned, I'm not sure...

Some boards appear definitely to have Asmedia USB controllers but mine doesn't mention it. Maybe the Asmedia drivers appearing on boards download page was a database mixup?
@Saltgrass I don't have any unknown devices under the USB tree in device manager. I have 6 USB ports at the back, 4 blue (3.0...) and two black 2.0...

Asmedia USB 3.0 drivers installation failure.

An unknown device does not show up in a particular section. But once a driver is loaded, it will move to its assigned area.

You have an ASMedia controller chip on your system (ASM1083) which appears to be a PCIe to PCI controller. My system has an additional ASMedia chip (ASM1074) which is USB 3.0.

If you are correct about a mistake being made on the downloads page or the driver is not for your Revision of the board, we still have two problems. If we could get the unknown device recognized it might clear up the other problem but if you also feel you are not getting USB 3.0 performance, then possibly something needs an additional driver.

You have the correct rear ports for USB (4 blue + 2 black). The ones on the mid-board are ports on the motherboard where you can plug in front USB ports if you have such a device.

You may want to unplug any USB devices, except keyboard and mouse to see what happens. The rear USB 2.0 ports (black)are normally used for a mouse and keyboard.

There is always a chance the new build is having a problem with some device. The quote below is what is shown for one of the earlier Bios updates. The 3.0 driver may be for that specific card..

    @Saltgrass

Where did you find the bit about my board having the ASM1083 PCIe to PCI controller and what is it's purpose?

What is the unknown device your referring to?

Well I've realized I don't think I actually have any USB 3.0 Devices so I guess I was more questioning whether the hardware info apps I have were reporting that USB 3.0 compatibility was there...

I overlooked this on the specs page, does this indicate that there are 3.1 USB ports?

    Intel® Z97 chipset :
    6 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 port(s) (2 at back panel, blue, 4 at mid-board)
    Intel® Z97 chipset :
    8 x USB 2.0/1.1 port(s) (2 at back panel, , 6 at mid-board)

I took some screenshots from HWiNFO and device manager again in case it helps. Would a Generic USB hub indicate a missing driver? I'm pretty sure that I installed the latest Intel USB driver assuming I have an Intel USB controller... Search downloads

If you're still having issues, try the Modded drivers available at Win-RAID.com: USB 3.0/3.1 Drivers (original and modded). Section B. is labeled "ASMedia USB 3.0/3.1 Drivers" and probably has what you need.

PS: I just ran the ASMedia and Intel modded drivers on my Z170 production desktop, having forgotten to do so on this new build, and my USB driver collection completely changed. Here's what I see there now:

The unknown device, I though I saw a HardwareID you posted, maybe not.

The ASmedia controller is not USB, but a PCIe to PCI bridge..

The answer to why those drivers are available is because you can purchase an add in card which has USB 3.1. If you have not installed that card, you do not have that capability.

Other capabilities are handled the same way. On other boards there may be a Thunderbolt add in card or some other updated capability. Folks which op for those improvements need drivers for those devices.
