Atikmdag.sys causing huge problems during startup

    Hello,

about 2 weeks ago I upgraded my very good running Win 7 Ultimate to Windows 10. First it worked good but than the problems started.

The system froze all of a sudden. OK - reset and go on but it got worse. I could not even start the computer any more because it froze during loading autostart software.

Finally I found out that my ATI Graphic Board 260x or better the driver is causing the problem. When I started the computer in Safe Mode and uninstalled the driver I could start the computer normally and without problems. For uninstalling I used the Software AMD said you should use.

But with the standard driver from MS I couldn't play games of course. It was just ok for office work.....

So I tried a lot of things but with driver, doesn't matter which one I tried, it did not work.

I finally found out that I do not have this file in my windows directory and copied it from windows.old to try what it will cause. And now the computer at least booted but took a few minutes. Strange

So after a loot of search in the internet I decided to buy a new Graphic board. AMD seems to have a huge problems with Windows 10 and this problem (see the Forum there) and they have no solution.

I tried a lot of other things too but no luck.

Now the computer is booting but still needs several minutes after startup (why do I have a SSD *Smile). But than it works. After a few hours I get an error that Microsoft isn't working and than I can just close Browser for example but everything with Windows, e.g. start button, does not work anymore -> reset.........

Still the problem seems to bee the same file: Atikmdag.sys

I read also that other hardware/software/drivers may need it but which one? Do I have them? Why is it loading if I do not have/need it? How can I solve this problem?

Because I need my computer also for work I am really interested in finding a solution without a new installation which will cause many days of work to get everything back to normal.

    Thanks a lot in advance!!

    :)

  2. Recent updates is causing problems during startup and inability to use taskbar, windows key menu, and charms.

I am currently having problems with my computer due to a recent update a few days ago. What happened before any major problems occurred was that the update never fully completed when I shut down my machine, and it took a significant amount of time for my
machine to boot back up when I turn it on.

Problems I am currently experiencing are:

-I am unable to use the taskbar as it will not allow me to press any of the shortcuts as well as the windows key, cortana, and the button that shows all the active progarms. It will however, interact with my mouse as it lights up when you hover on them as well
as see any active programs. I also have the ability to right-click on the taskbar. Unfortunately, the taskbar occasionally freezes up as well.

-I am unable to access any charms menus either through the windows start menu or the New notifications button. Because of this, I only have access of my computer settings through the control panel by right-clicking on the windows button.

I have downloaded the WIndows 10 Upgrade Assistant at Download Windows 10 and ran the update but it always end with an error giving me an error code :0xc1900107

Looking at other people's questions, I ran Event Viewer ->Windows Logs and under application i pressed "opened". I am not too sure what to look for but noticeable error was with task category of "database corruption". the first instance has the description

    "svchost (2420) TILEREPOSITORYS-1-5-21-4159056592-3872940080-1696294354-1001: A bad page link (error -327) has been detected in a B-Tree (ObjectId: 15, PgnoRoot: 36) of database C:\Users\Family\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\vedatamodel.edb (578 => 580,
    576)."

after that, all the other database corruption errors is

"svchost (2420) TILEREPOSITORYS-1-5-21-4159056592-3872940080-1696294354-1001: Data inconsistency detected in table Tile of database C:\Users\Family\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\vedatamodel.edb (583,5080)."

I should also add that before, I could not get the computer to fully start and it was forever stuck at the loading screen with the spinning white circles. I had tried to system restore the computer to its previous saved point under the boot menu options but
there was no available point it could load back into. I then tried the start-up repair option but it could not do it as it says there were errors. I then tried to do the factory restart option that removes all apps and programs but also kept my files, but
that as well faced errors. After I did all that, I restarted my computer and this time it wasn't stuck on the loading screen and I was able to login where I am currently at right now.

  3. Recent updates is causing problems during startup and inability to use taskbar, windows key menu, and charms.

    Hi Leonard,

In Windows 10, your device is always kept up to date with the latest features and fixes. Updates and drivers are installed automatically, with no need to select which updates are needed or not needed. In rare cases, a specific
driver or update might temporarily cause issues with your device, and in this case you will need a way to prevent the problematic driver or update from reinstalling automatically the next time Windows Updates are installed.

If a driver or update you are being offered is causing system crashes or instability and Windows was operating correctly prior to that update, you can follow these instructions below from the link to prevent the unwanted driver
    or update from being installed:

How to temporarily prevent a Windows or driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

Write to us, if you need further assistance.

    Thank You.

Please check ASUS for BIOS updates.

Please remove / disable items from the startup in taskmanager
These programs could interfere with the boot process giving you trouble and increase the boot time.

Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause for BSOD's.
Please remove Daemon Tools and run the SPTD pass through remover.

    • Uninstall Daemon Tools
    • Download the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
      • Double click the executable to open it
      • Click on the button shown below

If the button is grayed out, like in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can close the window

    Hi,

    Thanks a lot!

    1. ASUS Bios Update: I already did but no more updates at the moment
    2. WinThruster: already uninstalled and never used!
    3. Daemon Tool lite: I uninstalled it a few minutes ago

As soon as I can reboot I will check how it works and go on with your hints and post it here.

    Again: THANKS!

    Update:

    1. SPTD: no driver detected
    2. AI Suite II is uninstalled (ASUS)
    3. I changed some things in Autostart - not yet all "off" to test, just some do not start any more

As soon as I restart the system I will give another feedback and will go on with your suggestions.

    Thanks!

    OK, sorry for the delay!

I uploaded the details a few minutes ago on SevenForums (same NickName).

But what is "PSU" please *Smile ?

It is different meanwhile, but still the same problem: It takes 1-5 minutes for booting but somehow different. Today I had big problems to enter the system! Before it felt "better". It is also freezing after a few hours. Browsers etc. are still working, but if you want to open a new software e.g. it does not work anymore -> Reset (to press New Start does not work any more).

Just in case, I also uploaded the new log-files here.

    Thanks a lot!!

PSU = Power Supply Unit, the part that provides the power to your system.

Could you please remove DB3, if it already is uninstalled check the Program Files folders to delete the folder.

What site exactly? I cannot find your name back on the Windows 7 Help Forums

Your ASMedia sata controller drivers seem to be causing all the crashes of today.
Please check ASUS for driver updates or reinstall the drivers.

That is ok, but the Intel Smart Connect Technology is better to be ignored, it has lately caused many BSODs.
