Windows 10: Audio not working only in video playback apps

Recently, I cannot get any audio to play from any video playback apps such as "Films & TV", "VLC Player", and "Windows Media Player". I've tried downloading additional, third-party applications to try to play my videos with sound. I've tested additional programs such as "Media Player" and "Potplayer" with no luck.


I've tried running the windows troubleshooter regarding audio and video, checking to see if the apps have audio enabled or if the audio was muted and checked the volume mixer in the task bar.


Please note that other apps have no problem with audio the issue is only tied with video playback apps.

What's interesting is after opening VLC's audio visualizer, I can see sound waves moving when the videos are playing. This makes me feel like something is wrong with a windows setting perhaps?


If anyone can help me that would be amazing. It's been such a pain to preview my videos that now I have to create a file in Adobe Premiere just to play a video with sound.

1) Does this issue occur while playing video from the local drive?

I suggest you to run the video troubleshooter and check if it helps.

  Type Troubleshooting in the search box and click
  Troubleshooting.
  
• 
  In the left pane click on View all and Select
  Troubleshoot Audio Playback.
  
• 
  Follow the prompted steps to troubleshoot this issue.

No Video Playback

Hi,

There are several factors that may cause video clips not to play on Xbox App.
It is possible that your video card drivers are not updated. To properly isolate your concern, please clarify the following information:

• Are you able to play videos using other applications on your PC?
• Have you tried to check if offline videos are playing on your PC?
• Have you tried updating your graphics card drivers?

No HDMI option in Playback, video works fine


I decided today to try using my flat screen as a second monitor to do video tutorials on. I plugged in the HDMI and the video part works perfectly. But there is no sound. There is no option for HDMI in the playback panel (I made sure disconnect devices show was clicked. I tried updating audio and graphics drivers. I restarted 6 times. I tried three different cords.

The sound works fine with Chromecast, Roku, and ps3 so I know it's not the tv or the cords. Any suggestions are welcome because this is driving me insane.
