Windows 10: Background Intelligent Transfer Service keeps stopping

Hi all,

I was wondering whether you could help. I am trying to diagnose an issue where Windows Update is not able to download and to install updates. I have narrowed the problem down to the Background Intelligent Transfer Service where it is currently in a Stopped status and the service startup type is set to Manual instead of Automatic or Automatic Delayed. I have tried starting the service when on Automatic, Automatic Delayed and Manual and all result with the service status set to Stopped and Manual after a couple of minutes including amending the Subsequent failures to Restart the Service which should stay in a loop if continually fails. The strange thing is that it is able to upgrade using Windows Feature Updates but not able to apply Quality Updates. I also tried using psWindowsUpdate and that doesn't work either as it also relies on the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. The laptop I am currently trying to diagnose has currently got Windows 10 2004 and was upgraded from Windows 10 1909 then from Windows 10 1507 then from Windows 7 SP1.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Gaming Lag and Background Intelligence Transfer Service (BITS)

Let's try disabling the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) via Command Prompt by following the steps below:

• Open Command Prompt.
• Run/type msconfig.
• Click on Services tab.
• Remove check mark on Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
• Click on Apply.
• Restart your computer.

TMP files are temporary files that are created to temporarily hold data on your computer while you are using a specific software application. Since it is just a temporary files, it is safe to say that there are no consequences when you delete.

I suggest that you use the Disk cleanup tool to delete the temporary files. Here's how:

1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard and type Disk cleanup in the search box and hit
   Enter.
2. Under Files to delete, select the file types to get rid of. To get a description of the file type, select it.
3. Select OK.

If you want to temporarily disable the Background Intelligent Transfer Service to manually delete the said file, just follow these steps.

1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard and type Services in the search box and hit Enter.
2. In the Services window, look for and right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and choose Properties.
3. If you want to stop it from running, just hit the Stop button under
   Service Status, but if you want to disable it, change the option in
   Startup type to Disabled, hit Apply, then
   OK.

How can I disable Background intelligent transfer service (Permanently)?

1. First open services
   
2. open properties of background intelligent transfer service
   
3. click stop and in startup type choose disabled
   
4. on the recovery tab choose take no action for first and second failure
   
5. click ok and the service will never starts again.
