  1. Backup Options?

    Hi,

How do you guys and girls, backup your data?

I just got this, hoping it wasn't a mistake - WD 8 TB My Cloud EX2 Ultra Network Attached Storage - Black (WDBVBZ0080JCH-EESN).

    Thanks

    :)

  2. Nokia 5500 Sport - no stopwatch?

Hey, you're right. Actually I had forgotten about that. It's a pity that it doesn't suit motorsports or any other precise measurements because it doesn't have hundredths of seconds but it's a start. It's also annoying that it saves the exercise data everytime
I simply want to time an activity.

    Thanks though.

  3. Nokia 5500 Sport - no stopwatch?

I'm pretty sure one was not included, odd as it may seem. I was **bleep**.

The software you mentioned does the trick but costs 10 bucks. Feels like a hack too.

Anyway thank you for you help.

    Backup Options?

There are two types of backup

    1) data backup - easy to do and can be as simple as using file explorer manually through to automatic packages like File History Backup built into Windows.

Personally, I just manually copy data.

    2) System image backups - here you make a complete backup of OS and Programs. I use Macrium Reflect (free version is adequate for most users).

Each user has to determine best strategy for themselves.

I keep OS+Programs on SSD and regularly make image backups. I keep non critical data on hdd and backup to external drive occasionally. I backup critical data as I create it to Onedrive cloud service.

  5. Hi,
A lot of these types of devices are only as good as the enclosure they are in
If it goes out so does all of your data because of the devices encryption features usually only work in it's original enclosure

So I personally just buy enclosures without hard drives in them and add my own
If the enclosure goes out I just buy another one and insert the same hdd and it's no big deal.

I haven't looked too closely at the one you posted but you might inquire with the seller or manufacture about data loss in what I mentioned.

But I also use Macrium reflect free for full system images
And also manually copy and paste files to a different hdd
I do not use Onedrive... or any cloud services.

I use Macrium for system images and FreeFileSync for data. Both images and data go to 2 separate physical disks.
    A WD 2TB and 1TB. But I don't store videos or music.

    Backup Options?

I use Uranium Backup which automatically backs up to my NAS at a set frequency so I don't need to think about doing it myself.

    Hi there.

I do 4 sets of backups - have several Windows clients (both laptops and desktop (1)) and some VM's.

    1) Windows Data files to NAS (Linux) via rsync/grsync
    2) Windows OS partition(s) as HDD images via Macrium to shared drives on the NAS.
    3) Windows data files (step 1) from NAS to external HDD then taken off line.
    4) Windows OS images (step 2) from NAS to external HDD then taken off line.

This way ensures you have two independant sets of backups --those on the NAS and those on external HDD so the chances of losing it all are almost infinitesmal.

I ensure always that the Windows OS is always in its own partition / HDD.

Step 2 is the only step that needs to be done manually - although I believe the macrium jobs can be scheduled to run automatically. On the Linux type of NAS systems CRONTAB is the standard built in way of scheduling jobs --works flawlessly.

This workflow has been 100% successful for me even if it might seem a bit OTT. Data files actually don't change much so the grsync program only updates changed files / new files.

For those with single systems MACRIUM is fine for OS backup and for data even Windows explorer would work - but there are other paid alternatives such as paid version of macrium or Acronis.

Whatever you decide you CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH BACKUP. !!!!!

Note - problem with automating the WINDOWS Image backups is you might - especially if you are backing up kids / other people's computers connected to your network is that you have to ensure that they are connected at the time the backup runs. In general I just automate saving their data and try and get them used to running the Macrium Image backup daily.

Automating the DATA backup is no problem of course so long as the machine(s) are connected to the LAN.

    Cheers
