    Backup while PC asleep

I have scheduled my PC, running Windows 10, to backup to an external hard disk at 2am.

As I am sure you know, having read so many complaints on different websites, this doesn't work because the PC is in sleep mode and doesn't wake up to perform the task.

The result is that it starts a backup every time I wake it up for the first time each day, meaning that it is unusable for the time it takes to perform the backup.

This is clearly a problem for large numbers of users.

I have attempted various "solutions" Microsoft offers, and none of them work. None of them work! What is the point of fobbing off your customers with rubbish which does not solve their very real problems?

I am not a geek. I have very little knowledge of the workings of computers. The attitude of Microsoft seems to be stuck in the era when the use of computers was a hobby for technical experts. But for many years now, the computer industry, including Microsoft, has been advertising its wares widely to the general public. I should not need to have special knowledge or skills in order to use your products.

Please advise me how to arrange for my PC to perform a backup at a time when I am unlikely to want to use it. This obviously means at a time when it has gone into sleep mode. Please explain it in simple, everyday terms that I can understand.

Please send me an email to alert me to your answer to this obvious, simple problem. This is a problem which, I suggest, has a far higher priority for the average user than advancing the boundaries of clever but abstruse gimmicks.

    :)

    PC Build Steps

Ok just because I like steps i am going to create some steps. Please give me the stamp of approval/disapproval
    • Install system in case
      • Remember to connect SSD and optical to same SATA ports on motherboard
    • Turn on PC
    • setup HDD
    • run blend test in prime95 for 30-60 min
      • run realtemp at the same time
    • While in Prime95 test
      • if CPU goes above 70c in RealTemp, I have a leaky CPU
      • if my system locks up or blue screens, there is an instability in the system somewhere
      • if my system does not lock up or blue screen, my CPU is not damaged and I am in the clear!
    What do you guys think??

Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

Download Back Up Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.
